Bad IDM--Again
We have a 2000 Ford F450 Superduty, with a power chip and exhaust brake. We tow a 16,700 pound fifth wheel (loaded weight) and have 132,000+ miles on the engine as fulltime rvers. This was a pretty expensive repair (double what they charged in WA) and we're wondering if there's something we can do to prevent the IDM from failing yet again. They replaced the cam sensor (free) apparently as a recall warranty part.
Original symptoms were: hard to start, hesitation, engine missing (like you had bad spark plugs on a gas engine), hard shifts, stalling, no power. We changed the fuel filter (twice), the air filter, drained the water/fuel separator thingy (yeah, I'm real mechanical), added diesel fuel injector cleaner.
I'm the distaff half of the Vagabonds
I'm guessing you showed a P1316 code which states Injector Circuit/IDM codes detected.
Make sure you deal with a mechanic that understands these motors. I haven't heard of too many IDM failures unless they were getting wet. Check the spash guard (wheel well liner) above the drivers side front tire. Your IDM is hidden in there.
The more common problem is the UVCH (Under Valve Cover wiring Harness) that either comes unplugged from the connector under the valve cover, or chaffing wires against one of the moving parts under the valve cover. We have a 7.3 specific section https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum31/ where you can read up on the diesel engines. Pick up an Ohm meter and keep it handy. If it happens again we can walk you through the steps using the Ohm meter to diagnose a UVCH problem. I've done that on one of my work trucks and told the mechanic "this is what I want you to do". he called back an hour later and told me he had found my chaffed wire problem.
