Speedo Gear

Hi. I have a 1986 f-250 6.9 autmoatic 4x4 standard cab. I was trying to fix my speedometer because it wasnt working since i bought it last month. I found out there is no speedo gear when i disconnected it at along with the speed sensor. I tried calling ford dealers parts departments and got nothing. I called a couple trans shops and they werent any help either. How can I figure out what gear i need.
http://www.transmissioncenter.org/Fo...eter_Gears.htm
I got the website from someone here on the gears but I dont know which one I need. If anyone could help me out Id appreciate it. Also if you need more info on my truck let me know. Thanks

Assuming the rear axle is OEM check the door post label for trans code/ratio....... then order the inside gear and outside gear to match that ratio. If you post the trans ratio someone will offer the color and even part #s I would think.

The axle ratio and tire size you are running are the numbers needed to figure the speedo gears.

They list an 8 tooth drive gear that fits some 1345 transfer cases.

To figure tire size, with the truck sitting on level ground measure from the center of the axle to the ground and double that number to figure tire size accurately.

235/85-16 tires are about 31" tall as an average.

Using 31" tires a 3.55 axle would need an 18 tooth driven gear with the 8 tooth drive gear.

Using 31" tires a 4.10 axle would need a 21 tooth driven gear with the 8 tooth drive gear.

Okay I got a C9 Axle and the tires are 235/85/16E 31"

Also, not relating to the gears. When I was replacing my starter, which was a pain in the butt btw. The top bolt is annoying. But anywho. When I removed the starter I noticed some of the gears from the transmission, the ones the starters gears turn, are very worn and some of them are chipped. Im assuming this is very bad. When I start the vehicle it makes a hard click noise. You can feel it click hard as well. Please let me know how severe this could be.

Replacing a flexplate isn't bad but you have to pull the trans. The plate may be cracked which would let the gear get out of line with the starter.

On a standard trans I replace just the ring gear.

A Ford dealer should have been able to help you with the gear for your trans. They blew you off. Thats not good.

In order to pull the trans would the engine have to be lifted? because if thats the case id have to take it to a shop as i dont have the equipment to do it. I definitely have the patience to can do attitude to do it but no tools. Or could I fix that while still under the vehicle.

You won't have to lift the motor. You will have to keep it from falling which can be done with a bottle jack and a piece of 2x4 under the oil pan.

If you don't have a good trans jack then I wouldn't recommend you doing it. Not that you couldn't do the work but that is a dangerous thing to do without a good jack.

what kind of trans jack would be required. Ive searched on google and theres a variety of them pedestal trans jack, floor trans jack. because i would rather buy that and do it myself instead of paying someone else the same amount. I could always use another tool.

There are alot of jacks on the market. Being and old school truck and equipment mechanic I work from the floor. I pick the little trucks up and set the tires on 8x8 blocks. I am 6'2" 230. My sixpack is more like a milk jug now so I need the room.

Shop around. Get a good jack. That is one tool you don't want to skimp on. I don't mean to go get a monster. I have one that I can split a 80 horse farm tractor with but you probably don't need that. Just get one that you will be safe with what you are doing. Good wide wheel stance and a good deck. Also that has good adjustment screws.

No truck is worth getting hurt over.

Ive seen on a couple of sites Trans Jack Adapters, that fit where the saddle is after removing it. Will most standard 2ton jacks be able to use this adapter? or would I need to buy a 3-ton jack that I know is compatible. Or are these adapters not worth it. They are like 40 bucks.

You will need something substantial to handle the weight....... a floor jack adapter may do it but control of the trans would require more than 1 person.
