I Have a 76 F-150 long box. while changing U-joints the other day I noticed that the drive shaft was a little loose inside the "carrier" that holds the first half of it in place.
I was wondering what the tollerences are on this? Should it be able to move side to side or up and down at all?
Also what is the correct name for this part? And where would be the best place to get a replacement?
That is the carrier bearing. You can get one at the same place you buy u joints. Everyone has their opinions on how much play they can have. I think they are good until the rubber starts getting beat out of them and they have 3/8"-1/2" or more play.
