Ok i have an 85 f-150 with the 302, carb, with the aod tranny... ive been tryin to fix it up, just got the motor running perfect and the transmission will not shift past second, shifts into second smooth but then wont shift past. Ive done just about everything i can think of, can anyone help me please
p.s. i drove it with it not shifting and after driving it for a little while the brakes lock up, is it just something getting hot??
Check the TV cable (called above the kickdown cable) If the grommet is bad or loose on either end and has been drivin more about 5 minutes, Go shopping for a rebuild, also if this cable is improperly adjusted, it will case the same end result. It's kinda sad how a .49C grommet can wreak so much havoc.
ya i checked both, im not really sure on how they are supposed to look or be so... i was thinkin that the linkage on the tranny may need to be cleaned up, and is the linkage at the carb supposed to be loose??
If it's a rod, then you either have a severly molested truck with an AOD, or you dont have an AOD. AOD was never factory installed with a Kickdown rod and hence would be severly burned up. All mechanically controlled AOD's had a cable from the throttle linkage to the throttle valve (TV) that would control the pressures and shift points according to throttle position.
Look at these pictures and compare the gasket shapes to your transmission pan..
ya its aod and its a rod, idk says in my book that's wat it should b, gottA remember its an 85 carburated, it has a 351 2 bbl if that makes a diff, I think I'm gonna try the rod linkage rebuild kit, unless anyone else can come up with anything... Thanks 4 the support
My 83 has AOD and its controled by a rod similar to kickdown linkage. Its all factory - unmolested. My 83 Ford shop manual details how to adjust it with photos that are identical to what I have. Perhaps the early AODs are different?
The operations should still be the same, if the rod has fallen out of adjustment, an AOD will still happily cook itself. I would check the adjustment, fix as needed and then test drive. If it still isn't happy, then I would go see a trustworthy transmission shop and let them check it.
ok, one thing i have to clear up though, the linkage at the carburater is supposed to be tight?? and is there supposed to be some sort of rubber o-ring like to keep the rod tight at the carb??
