If you get a manual transmission, do not tow in 5th or Overdrive. That gearset is not very strong, while 4th gear is straight through, locked up so there are no 'gears' involved and it is a lot stronger.

They run on gasoline. The 4.0 is a LOT stronger than the 3.0, and in many cases uses the same amount or less of fuel. I don't know why, but think it is a gearing issue. As someone said, if you can ruin a 3.0 that is fueled and cooled, you should be kept away from things more complex than a refrigerator.
The 4.0 has 2 versions that I know of, OHC and OHV. They had problems with the chain 'cassette' and upper intake manifold gaskets when cold. I know of one 4.0 that has over 200,000 and runs very well in an Aerostar. It is the rocker-arm motor. Both versions are strong.

My 04 ranger 4x4 with the 4.0 sohc, manual tranny and 4:10 gears got 22/25 mpg. I ran all synthetic fluids and had a few engine mods. I was very pleased with the mpg. I guess the average with my combo is 18/22, the bama engine programer, udp's and synthetics really helped. Also I live and work in the country, so I do no city driving, small town at best.
searched mpg and got some pretty scary reading. is a ranger even worth getting mpg wise? ppl with the same model trucks seem to be getting different mpg. does it vary from vehicle to vehicle?
The mileage on the ranger is all over the map. I've owned 5 and have allways gotten decent mpg whatever engine it had. I've never had a ranger with the 3.0, just 4.0's and 4 cylinders. The worst mpg I got was with my 2000 ranger 4x4 with the 4.0, auto tranny and 4:10 rearend, it got 18 local driving.
