Shimmie

Seems my Exploder Lucille "Lucy" has always had a shimmies at the 65-70 MPH range... a lot of research has netted the following "Cure"

<TABLE cellSpacing=2 cellPadding=1><TBODY><TR vAlign=top><TD>1.</TD><TD>Raise and support the vehicle. </TD></TR><TR vAlign=top><TD>2.</TD><TD>Loosen, but do not remove, the powertrain/drivetrain mount fasteners. </TD></TR><TR vAlign=top><TD>3.</TD><TD>Lower the vehicle. </TD></TR><TR vAlign=top><TD>4.</TD><TD>CAUTION</B> : Do not twist or strain the powertrain/drivetrain mounts.

Move the vehicle in forward and reverse (2-4 ft).

</TD></TR><TR vAlign=top><TD>5.</TD><TD>Raise and support the vehicle. </TD></TR><TR vAlign=top><TD>6.</TD><TD>Tighten the powertrain/drivetrain mount fasteners. </TD></TR><TR vAlign=top><TD>7.</TD><TD>Lower the vehicle. </TD></TR><TR vAlign=top><TD>8.</TD><TD>Test the system for normal operation.</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

Anyone ever heard of this, done this, or even thinks it might work?

Just looking for opinions.

We had a 94 sploder that developed a shimmie and I tightened the large nut(not the one behind the steering wheel) on the front spindles because of some wear in the front wheel bearings and that solved most of the problem. There was some play at the wheel. I didn't have to replace the bearings, just repacked them while things were apart.

First thing I did to Green was have the motor mounts replaced. That little 4.0 just seemed to move around a bunch. But they weren't that bad. So if I understand what is ment that you need to loosen the front and rear (tranny) engine mounts and move it forward and back to align the engine and tranny then tighten the mounts?

Thats a good idea. How long has it been since you checked the front wheel bearings?

Some times that little trick works but you have to push the vehicle by hand not drive it. I wtill say pull the driveshaft and I will spin it and see if it is out of balance. Worst case scenario we can throw it on the dyno and try and track it down that way.

It was just a thought.. I just did a little web searching.

I don't think it is the wheel bearings because it has always had it... even when Mark owned it.. and think of all the things that have been replaced since then...
