gear ratios

Does the VIN have the gear ratios in it somewhere? I have a 1994 f-150 4x4 and the rear gears have seen better days.

Your door sticker should have the axle code. Mine is C-9 which translates into a 3:55 limited slip 6200# capacity. Post yours and we can decode it for you.

The tag on your rear axle should also tell you what the ratio is.

Ryan is correct. H-9 Is a 3:55 L/S with a 3800# capacity. Should be plenty of these in the bone yards. Good luck.

There are no planetary gears in a differential. All you said was the gears have seen better days. Are they physically damaged? Does it whine?

when 'you turn sharp' as in driving it?- if so,does it feel as if the rear wheels are locking up somewhat before it "Pops" or bangs?
I ask because I got somewhat the same problem at the moment and I'm about to swap out housings on mine.

If I back out and turn sharp and then go forward it pops and feels like something is locking up also if turning at a stop sign it sometimes does it. I just took the cover off and some large pieces of metal came out so its toast.
I have found a used rear end and I am going to swap out the gears with new bearings and seals everywhere encluding the axles.

That sounds like what mine was doing before it got worse, - mine sounds like its close to detonation at this point, there was chunks in mine too-this also messed up one of the axels it looks marred where the locking clip is and kinda peened over, so check those. I'm changing out the whole housing on mine, seems to be less work in a way.- thanks,-good luck.
