So ive come to the relization that #8 has gone bad So this weekend I will be swaping it out for a new one... I am tempted to do it myself on the acount that it really doesnt seem to be that hard to do. (thanks to instructions from 7point3.com) I was just wondering if there is anything els i need to do and or have to make sure all goes well? Oh and on the instructions it says to "fill the hpop with clean oil" how do i do that? is it from the top of it right in front of the fuel bowl or is there another way???
As always thanks for the help!!!
When I did my injector o-rings I just yanked the injectors out starting at the rear #6 and #8. The I used a hand pump to suck out the oil from the cylinders, and back in they went with a little oil on the o-rings.
what i did was after i pulled my injector i removed that glow plug just cranked the engine till the oil came out the glow plug hole.ps put a towel over the hole!i pulled 6 of them at the same time and thats what i did!
If your current funds allow, I'd go ahead and at least replace all 4 injectors as well as the glow plugs on that side if you don't feel like messing with all 8 right now. There's nothing worse than pulling the valve cover to change one, then having to go back in 2 weeks later to change another.
Bill- My SES light has been on with the A # 8 injector code for a bit now i have run cleaner and other stuff through it and have had no positive result. The truck smokes bad on start up and def. has a miss to it. The only issue i cant figure out is that it is way worse on cold starts then any other time. (both the smoke and the miss)
Chris- Unfortunetly enough $ is tight and all i can afford is one injector. How much are yall looking at on an injector it seems to me anywhere i go they are outrageous.

have you looked into the possibility of an under valve cover harness (UVCH) getting chafed through and not making a connection with the injector? it is pretty common although i would think it would happen to more than one injector. it is worth a shot though.

I agree with Nic, lets eliminate the inexpensive stuff first, although with the smoking it could be an injector.
Retorque the rocker arm pedastals while you are in there. 20 ft lb.
Nic's comment about the wiring is worth looking into. Mine were bad, both sides, at 50k. Fried the plug in the valve cover gasket as well so they had to be replace at the same time.

i noticed when i was in there that the wires are at very close quarters to the rocker arm, its at least worth checking into for a fraction of the cost of a new injector....injectors are 120 INCH lbs torque also, FYI
Well, the #8 likes to fail when all is not optimum because it does not work like the rest. It is a LL unit and different. I would make sure the wiring is in order. The VCs are not a big issue to remove. After a couple of times, they almost become like removing lug nuts or some other mundane item on the truck. Not really much to it.Just know that when you pull an injector, oil and fuel will fill the cylinder. Fuel and oil don't make a good crankcase lube. Get it out as best you can.

What color smoke are you getting? Could you have a bad GP or two? What code are you getting for the injector and how are you getting it?
Mike- The smoke is white with almost a blue tint in the right light but not really. If i had to say it smelled like something it wouldn't be oil. It almost has a propane smell to it. (Just as a comparison) The code is a p308 which i got with my bully dog down loader. I would think that it is a GP issue but it starts pretty good maybe only a few cranks and it fires, consistently. No different then before i had this issue.
Dan/Mike/Brandon-I'm going to pull the VC here in a few check the torque on the rocker arm. And give the UVCH a good look too.
What if i do this and mess up the UVCH? Then i will automatically need a new one. Is the UVCH also the VC gasket??? or are they two different pieces???
