I found this ad on craigslist. DO you guys think it sounds like a good engine to have to rebuild for my 68 f-250? my truck has a tired 360 and a good automatic C6 which I would be using on the new engine. What questions should I be asking the guy? http://salem.craigslist.org/pts/580874937.html
There is a good chance that his engine is a 360 also. My recommendation is that you rebuild what you have if you can be without the truck for 2-3 weeks.
Do not buy the engine without measuring the stroke.
All FE engines look identical. 360 stroke: 3.50" / 390 stroke: 3.78"
Ask to see the receipts for the engine rebuild. To some ppl, an engine rebuild means valve seals and a paint job.
While there's no guarantee what the engine NOW is, the original VIN engine codes (4th digit) for a 1973/76 F100/350 are: H = 390 2V / M = 390 4V / Y = 360 2V
While I don't disagree with Bill da Dummy, a 74 should have hardened valve seats. Look between the two center spark plugs for a number that starts D2TE or DT3E Being able to hear it run would be a plus. If the motor is running without knocking or smoking, $300.00 or less is not a bad price if yours can't be rebuilt. Try talking him down to $250.00 if you can, but go prepared to bring it back. (unless you live close by and want to check him out)
While it can be a 390 a 360 is more likely, but if you need a motor........
i am in the middle of rebuilding a fe motor and i thought i had a 390 and now i think its a 352 or 360 anyway i have spent 1100 dollars rebuilding and counting..so if someone is selling a motor that was rebuilt only 20ish thousand miles ago and is only asking 375 for motor and truck i would really have to stop and ask why so cheap after spending that kind of money.

It could be because his mommy or wife told him to get the crap out of her sight, and like right now.
Did you ever notice that most FE engines become 390's when people are selling? It's not too bad a price for engine and trans.. Most junk yards figure 1$ per cubic inch. Check it out closely, if it's still in truck, can you hear it run, do a comp check pull a valve cover etc. This would be if you are thinking about just dropping it in without rebuilding.

Sometimes you get lucky too, I recently found a 390/4spd/205xfercase all bolted together in a hi boy frame from my local junk yard for $375, motor turns over nice but probably needs rebuilt. It was a good deal.
impossible to tell 390 and 360 apart unless you meausre stroke, i would jump right no that though, if your motor isnt rebuildable, then i would hop all over this deal, as it will bolt directily to your trans, if its a 390 or a 360, either way. Also i would ask for recipts for the rebuild, no recipts then offer him 250 for it, as he has no proof of the rebuild.
