pullin the head
i have started to pull the head on the passenger side because it had a minor knock and it was puffin blue smoke, i have pulled the injection pump, the manifold, and almost have the head off. my question is what could be causing it? it didnt have any bent push rods, so maybe bent valve or flat lifter? any help is apreciated. thanks

Could have been a bad injector.............bad CDR, valve oil seal.....what did the smoke smell like......fuel, oil or coolant.

it smelt like oil. when i had the valve cover off i fired it up and it puffed blue smoke out of the pusrod hole. that why i was thinkin bent valve or stuff valve.

so you didn't do any diagnostics or search here before removing head. that's 100 bucks in gaskets to remove one head.

If your doing one side do both heads........ have them checked over for condition. You will need new head gaskets, bolts and valley pan......
Note to pull the head on pax side... you will be required to hold the push rods up to clear the A/C box ....... same going back in.
Check this out if you have not already........

they stretch and won't torque down correctly. both head gaskets and the intake gasket is 150 bucks here in houston. don't know about the bolts.

yeah but just throwing parts on it isn't going to fix it. you gotta do some diagnostics steps on it. easiest things first.

all the rocker were tight. its missing with a slight knock and it burns oil bad. puffs blue smoke at idle and only get worse when the motor is reved.

have you taken any head bolts loose yet. if not, do you have a way to get a compression tester for a diesel that screws into the glowplug hole.

Have you serviced the CDR? If not, that can easily cause the blue smoke part of your problem. When you look down into the intake mainfold, is there a lot of oil residue?
I agree that the knock could be an injector. Have you been running any fuel additive?
Diesels are so high on compression that some blow-by is inevitable...

IDI bolts are NOT the torque to yeild type.
They are reusable. Allthough the ones near the exhaust manifold do get pitted.
