hey guys still learning about these P.S.'s I checked my fuel pressure yesterday with a regular fuel pressure gauge that i use on all my gassers. It was very difficult to get to the schrader valve being so close to the wire harness. but I got it on. fuel pressure was only around 20 psi but came up to about 50 psi at 2000 rpm should the pressure be up above 40 at idle?? not sure if i should do the BB mod if it is at 50 psi at 2000 rpm? how should this psi thing read out at idle. thanks
is the pump just the same as a gasser? should I try the other tank? these are not like other diesels with mech, pumps correct? such as lift pump etc. using the bb on the spring is this a regulator?
There is a mechanical lift pump in the valley of the engine. its two stage. first is a diaphram lift pump that feeds into the fuel filter housing then the FF housing feeds into the second piston stage that is high pressure (60-70 psi) out to the heads. No pumps in the tanks.
The shim is for the fuel pressure regulator spring. here is a pic of where the spring is at.
yikes guess i was way off uh? ok so it does have a pump on the engine.. I have been wondering about all this. what can i exspect to get into in having to replace the pump? and what kinda of cash will it cost me. I will let ya know I have done alot of gassers I have 2 63 f100's. 1-61 f250 (that i want to make a diesel) and a 93 lightning 393 stroker that i have built.. this is opening up a whole new world to me and I love it
The pumps run about $100 plus some new fuel lines that run between the pump and the filter housing. The filter housing needs to come out and the large banjo bolt in the back is hard to get to but its a DIY job. It will take a few hours. Pump is availible at most parts stores and I prefer to get the fuel line and banjo bolt seals/washers right from Ford so you don't have to cut to length bulk hose.
here are part numbers
Fuel Line Banjo Outlet Seals (seals banjo fitting of "wishbone" line)
(Ford) F4TZ-9A375-A
Fuel Hose, BLUE (Aeroquip FC498-06)
(Ford) F4TZ-9324-CA, 3" Long lift pump to filter inlet
(Ford) F4TZ-9324-DA Shorter than above, Filter outlet to High Pressure (piston) pump inlet
There are two other hoses as well but I guess I don't have the numbers for those. One is fromthe pressure regulator to the return line and the other from the supply line to the fuel pump. You friendly Ford parts counter should be able to get those for you.
search for "FPR shim" for more detailed infor, basicly you open up the fuel pressure regulator and put a BB behind the spring, it helps bring your fuel pressure up, helping your truck to run smoother
