using it to tow 4500 camper, I know that I will upgrade to 4.10.
My tranny seems like it is gonna fail if i pull the camper as is.. I have read about these "towing torque converters" that are supposed to help. Seems like my torque converter just spins and spins without the truck moving much, and forget about a hill...
I changed the fluid in the tranny and it looked good, magnet clean, no garbage in pan... tranny has dreaded torque converter shudder... Im thinking of changing the valve body on that... any ideas? OR, is there a tranny that I can just bolt in that wont require computer adjustments or linkage or driveshaft issues... Im looking for a tougher more dependable tranny
You really don't have the ideal truck for towing. The tranny isn't weak exactly, but it's not real strong either. I wouldn't tow that much weight without a shift kit and a cooler for it. If it's shuddering, then it sounds like it's on its last legs anyway.
The 302 is not a great towing motor either. It doesn't make the low end torque that a 300 or 351 will.
yes, i drained it. My original question was "do these companies offering towing torque converters or performance converters do anything that would benefit towing..

Performance TQ converters are designed to never lockup, which may help keep the motor in it's powerband but will generate hugh amounts of heat and that's murder on transmissions. Your best plan of attack is to get the 4.10 gears and at least have a shift kit installed in the tranny if you don't also go ahead and get a new stock style TQ converter, and then keep it out of OD when towing. Even with all this it won't be like you are suddenly driving a Powerstroke, but it'll have a chance of living to tell the story.
Thanks for the reply.
My other question was.. is there a trans that is stouter that would bolt up in the truck that wouldnt require work on computer, changing linkage, or driveshaft issues. (see original post for truck info)
