Question Compressor housing Mod?

Does anyone have some detailed pics of a stock compressor housing compared to the ATS porting housing.

Not sure how much detail you're after, but this is what I've got.

Does anyone have an old stock compressor housing they would send to me for shipping? I really don't want to play around with my only good one.

The surging is caused by the turbo not being able to keep up with the air volume going out, with the volume coming in. Essentially it looks like the ATS has a bigger intake. I'm wondering, if with some extreme porting, or cutting! then smoothing up if we could replicate the ATS housing results. This is just something I have been thinking about.

btw thanks Jermey, Nice looking rig, is that stock lift?

Thanks Josh. It's lifted a little. The lift was on the truck when I got it, so I'm not sure what brand it is, but it appears to be just an added leaf in each pack, both in the front and rear, bringing them up 4" and 2" respectively based on comparative meaurements to a stock truck.

The ATS housing does have a larger intake, and that's where the porting, or "bleed ring" is located. I'm just curious, what you're thinking about how to port the stock compressor housing?

I might have a spare. I'll check in the garage this evening.

That bleed air ring in the ATS housing is really what stops the surging. You will not be able to duplicate that with a stock housing. The ATS housing is more than worth it. . . and if you like a whistle. . . damn, I have never heard a 7.3 turbo scream like one with the ATS housing.

Well I have read that a Blow off valve in gasoline turbo charged engines prevent/ reduce stall. I suppose this bleed ring serves the same purpose. I had a late 80's turbo charged Porsche without a bleed ring on the turbo but it did have a blow off valve that recirculated back into the intake.

A bleed ring is similar to a blow off valve in that it gives the pressurized air a place to go other than back through the compressor wheel. However, a BOV is designed more for a quick and sudden release of air due to a pressure spike. The bleed ring will let air back through at a slower rate, in an effort to prevent turbo surge. Since we don't have a throttle plate, the sudden pressure spikes aren't a big problem for us.
