I am your newest member, I live in the Low Country of South Carolina in a bedroom community to Myrtle Beach called Galivants Ferry. Its on 501 so if you have ever gone to Myrtle Beach from the west you have past my way.
I am getting older and bored with fixing up/ hot roddin mustangs and have been toying with ideal of restoring an old truck. I have been looking at Peterbuilts but ran accross a 1965 F-600 striaght truck. Company one owner and only few miles on the clock, used for drilling sampling cores. anyway fell in love with the truck even in its forgotten state. hoping to close up the deal with owners once I get delivery worked out. If not I have got my eye on a single axle short wheel base dump (66-68)
So I am just checking out, what I got myself into as far as parts networks, other people who enjoy old Ford trucks, is this truck a bad or good one to restore. Don't really care about value cause we all know they are money pits.
The truck is a single axle 5 speed with split and inline six, and presently cab and chassis, truck runs and drives decent.
I think its a good beginning if its relatively straight and rust free...rubber, ***** and interior stuff for the most part is easy to get. Depending on the engine some parts may be hard to find..basics though from what Ive encountered are for the most part easy to find...Im talking tune up stuff, water pump, alternator and such...
seems like my F-600 truck isn't listed a lot, seems everthing is geared toward the popular pick-up. Have a hard time finding photos, I guess people don't really want to spend money on restoring a cab and chassis
I think it's tough finding people on here who want to restore old industrial rigs cuz basically you don't find people anywhere with the "money" to fix up old big rigs and such. It's not something where you have to have the money tho, just the passion. I have a '60 Kenworth I'm fixing up that will probably take me about 20 years to get done (haha!) but a restored light heavy duty Ford would be just as unique and I think you should definitely do it. My dad had a '47 Ford F6 I believe dump truck. It was old and rusty with the original flat head v8 but that was the most awesome thing I can remember my dad having when I was a kid. Even cooler than the '60s Ford pickups he had. I may even restore one someday myself. I'd say if it's in decent shape then definitely. Do it. Oh and while I'm at it.. if you're going the big rig route with your F600... I think a 6-inch polished drop visor would really set it off! =P just my two cents worth!
I always wanted to do a bigger truck
a few years back I found a '52 24 White with integral sleeper
I think moderned up it would have been nice
then I figured I'd never live long enough to finish it and all my work would be waisted
Mighty Midget; Welcome aboard; I beleive all trucks are worth restoring and driving, as for others who have the same passion as you; I recommend you check out FTE member ms_michelle; she has an excellent 67 model along with several other big rigs. Go to the member list and about page 249 or so; scroll up her user name. She's active on the 67-72 forum.
I'm only able to play with the small trucks; havn't attempted to do anything large yet!!!
Looking forward to seeing your accomplishment..
Hi fellas,
I'm the newest member (15 minutes ago). I'm restoring a 1952 f6 flatbed. All orginal...is it worth the effort? cab off restoration
Well, first off I think you're in the wrong sub-forum. Not that we don't like older trucks, but I think you'd get a better response in the Effie forums.
"Is it worth the effort?"
If you like the truck, and are going to keep it, then sure.
If you are hoping to break even or get a return on your time and money, NO.
Medium and Heavy duty trucks do not have near the market of the pickups. They are less fun to drive, more difficult to find parts for, and take up a lot more space. Where I live, if I can't fit it in my garage I don't want it. But, the big truck collectors/restorers are a special crowd and extremely helpful. You may want to pick up a copy of Vintage Truck magazine for starters. You'll see a lot of bigger-than-pickup stuff in there.
The best thing to do with one of those, if you're not going completely original, is to give it a bed capable of hauling a car. That will always have some market value.
Hello William, a lot depends on what you want to do with it once it is complete. There was a fellow here a while back that wanted to use one with a nursery business, displaying plants on it.
For a project like that I would put it back as original as I could get it and put a $3000.00 paint job on it. It would be cool to be seen around town, in parades, etc.
If you want to work it, look for a newer chassis with better brakes, wheels, and running gear. Having a nice diesel engine and tranny of choice could be much easier for you at the end of the day, if you want to drive a head turner.
