I hope nobody "empties" it. Just open it long enough for any water to drain out then close it back up. I cracked it open at 10,000 miles and got maybe 2 drops of water then fuel. I had it open a total of about 3 seconds and had pure fuel for most of that time. The quality of your fuel and to a lesser extent the relative humidity where you live should probably drive how often you check it. I plan on every 10,000 miles just because it is easy to remember. Also, if I think I might have got some bad fuel I'll check it.
It does recommend a monthly drain mianly b/c fuel quality varies between stations. Diesel that has been sitting for a long time will have more water in it.
I have had my truck since August and drained it two times. Last time i got 2 drops, if that, out of it. I have never had the light come on telling me to drian it.
While we're on the subject, how much do you need to drain out to lower the level in the filter on the engine so when you take the top off to change the filter, fuel won't overflow and make a mess? Also, will draining that much at the frame mounted filter cut down the spillage that will run down the frame and your arm when changing the lower filter? Thanks, inquiring minds would like to know.
