ok fellas, as per the advice of many a 300 geru i'm gonna swap the head on my motor for a head off of a ford 240 but i got kind of a problem...when i go to old farm and car auctions and so forth, with old ford cars, pickups and straight trucks, i see several different kinds of 6 cylinder engines, but more often than not, none of the vehicles have ID tags or VIN's so how can i tell a 240 from the rest when i see one??
I think if you can take out one of the spark plugs and measure the stroke, a 300 should be 3,98" (i believe) and a 240 engine should be around 3.18. These two engines share the same bore don't they?
well, that's one way i could do it, but i was kinda looking for something a bit easier, for when i'm lookin for one at auctions and stuff...are there any identifying marks or anything i can look for?
The 240/300's have the intake on the passenger side. As for further identification, I am unsure without a VIN tag, and hopefully someone else can help you out on that.
oh, of course, duh, i should have known that...i feel stupid now o well, but on the off chance that nobody has a VIN...i.e. grain trucks, anyone else have any useful tips?
240 and 300 are the big ones. a tape measure may help. 170, 200, 250, etc... are smaller. Perhaps not an exact answer, but it'll narrow it down. From there, you can deduce what vehicle's came with 300's and what came with 240's. Some weren't offered with one or the other. Wikipedia and 300/240 might give ya a list of vehicles? My .02
