1997 ford explorer high squeal

1997 Ford Explorer, and when I start up, it sounds like my belt is slipping, but I have replaced the belt. I was drivin and put it into drive, and the squeel kept going until I felt like a jolt, and then the squeal stopped. Could it be the power steering pump leaking? This happens everyday when I drive.
Thanks,
Hill2523

My most recent experience with a very similar sound was the idler pulley on the serpentine belt. I replaced the tensioner a while back as it was bad, but then needed to replace the idler pulley a few months later when the squeal returned (or started at a new location). I can not imagine that the jolt you felt was a good thing.

Also could be the cam position sensor. Does it make less noise when it warms up?

Yes, once it warms up the noise only happens. Also, I have noticed when the AC is on the noise comes on, and then i cut the AC off, and it goes away.

Check the A/C compressor bearing if it only comes on when the A/C cuts on.

Yes, the noise only happens when I start up. Could it still be the idler pulley?

If it happens only at startup first check the pulleys. If not the pulleys then it is more than likely the cam position sensnor. Check out the recent post entitled "Cam Position Sensor 1994 Explorer" for a good write-up on replacing a CPS.

When you start up in the AM watch the pulleys while it is squealing and see if one is locking up. If not you probably need to replace the tensioner assy because it isnt applying sufficient belt tension.

If it comes and Goes with the AC Switch, It is likely the AC Pully, or the Clutch on the AC compressor These Freeze up pretty frequently, lukily there is a kit for replacing only the clutch assembly, and not the whole compressor.

Ok Let me get this strait.

The squeal occurs at start up and again when the truck is warm and you engage the AC.

I would suspect the idler pulley. It is not putting enough tension on the belt so when the ac engages the added load on the belt is causing the belt to slip and squeal. The reason it occurs on start up is the alternator is applying load to the belt as it is trying to recharge the battery from starting the car.

Respectfully

It only squeals on start up, and sometimes going around turns. I looked at the idler pulley this morning and felt the rim of the pulley,it was wet. Plus I looked down at it, and it didnt look like it straight inline with other pulleys.

Looks like you found your problem. I replaced mine last spring on my 91 and I found that it is easier to access it from below. Be careful with your radiator. I would recommend cutting a piece of cardboard to put in front of the radiator while you do the work. Just remember to take the cardboard out before starting the motor. The Part was about $30.00 from Local parts store and took less than 1/2 hour to replace.
