Well, i went home to pittsburgh for the weekend and got stuck in the drive way. I was backed in and it has a grade to it, nothing major. I had my hubs locked in and engaged the 4 wheel drive before i even back into the driveway to make sure i wouldn't get stuck. Well, with the driveway being snow covered i got stuck. In 4 wheel drive low, all i had was my rear tires spinning, the fronts werent doing anything. After about a half hour, my dad came and pulled me out with his chevy truck. I have the Warn premium manual hubs that were just installed no more than a year and a half ago. My question is how can i inspect these to see if they need replaced? Afterwards on the way home i was able to hear a sceeching noise, sounded metal to metal and it would almost feel like the hub engaged a couple times on the highway, there was a jerk that kind of slowed down the truck too. Seemed like the more i drove it the worse it got, last 10 miles of the trip i limped home under the speed limit with the flashers on. Any help would be appreciated.
jack up the front, lock the hubs, with transfer case not it 4wd, spin fron tire if the axle behind the tire spins it is locked if the axles doesnt it is not locking
Got some time between classes so i was able to jack up the front end and check it out. On the passenger side, when i jacked it up and locked the hub in, everything spun as it should. however there is play if i wiggle the top and bottom on the tire. The play is the whole hub assembly itself, makes me thing a bad wheel bearing right?
Onto the drivers side, after i jacked it up, locked the hub, and spun the tire, nothing spun. Makes me thing there is something wrong with the hub right? I guess i'll know more once i get some time this weekend and tear into it. Anyone got some advice on what to look for?
You got a point there, just sucks i wasn't even that stuck, if the front tires were spinning i would of gotten out. I think its about time to start looking for a new truck.
I would check to see that the hub was installed properly on the driver's side, but the passenger side could ether be a bad bearing or bad ball joints. I am assuming you left the tire on and could only see the outside when you witnessed the wiggle. The earlier metallic grind you heard would indicate you have a bad bearing that was blowing up on your drive.
New truck? It is just one of the many issues you will always have when you buy a used truck, you just dont know what the PO did before you. With that stated, sometimes it is better to deal with the 'evil' you know rather than the 'evil' you dont know.
I'll check out the hub on the drivers side when i get some more spare time and get back to you guys. On the passenger side, i doesn't feel like a ball joint. I just had them replaced not even a year ago and when i was moving the tire (yes it was left on) i was watching the ball joints and they didn't move, i'd imagine when i take the passenger side apart, the bearing will be shot.
This truck i have now only has 67,000 miles and theres alot of things wrong with it. I think i would much rather buy a newer truck then dump thousands into making this one nice.
getting pulled out by anything is better than shoveling, i took my 2wd truck through a pond once, got stuck. so then we went and got a chevy, chevy got stuck. the we got the families tow truck, lol luckily that didnt get stuck. lesson learned "if your gonna be dumb, make sure your not 4 hours late for work because you thought you could make it"
Once the weather stops teasing me i'll tear into the front end and check out whats wrong. Like i said, the ball joints were just replaced not long ago so hopefully thats not the issue. With the way it was acting, im thinking the wheel bearings. Anyone know if you can get the hub seperately without the rotor, or do you have to get them both?
Just disassemble the hub, if you need to get the bearing race pulled because it is stuck then take it to a mechanic or machine shop to get the bearings pressed out and new ones pressed in. Use good and fresh grease for bearings around disc brakes, very important else you will be repacking often. Tighten to specs and you should be back in business.
Hubs can be purchased seperately. The hubs may still be good. Just replace the races along with the bearings and you should be good to go. As long as the spindle is still in good shape.
I finally got a chance to take a peak at my front end. Haven't figured out the problem with the 4x4 engading b/c i didn't work on the side that the hub wasn't locking. On the passenger side, the one that was making noise, i took everything out down to the outer wheel bearing and the hub/rotor assembly wouldn't slide off. The rotor/hub assembly would not slide off like normal. I ended up tracing my movement down to the spindle nuts not being installed properly. I guess thats what i get for not doing my own work sometimes. Anyways, for the life of me i couldn't get that hub/rotor off so i called it quits and put everything back together the correct way because i had to get the truck out of the garage. Theres no more movement, but i think a seal is toast in there and need to replace the rotor on that side anyway. Is there a tool out there that i can buy to yank this hub off?
