I bought a 1999 F250 with a 7.3 stroke in it and while test driving it I noticed a "clunk" noise when you start and again when you are almost to a complete stop. I questioned the owner about the noise and he said it has been there for years. No matter what the noise is it was not going to keep me from buying the truck so I bought it without having it checked out. Any suggestions ? Has anybody experienced the "clunk"noise before? The truck has 97000 miles on it and is in great shape with some add ons. The truck has a 3" lift and some co-workers have suggested it be in the drive shaft alignment. I plan on taking it in to get checked out but thought I would throw it on the site first.
Thanks,
Wayne
Could be the driveshaft as you stated or U-Joints. Get it checked out for sure before buying it. You don't want a big problem on your hands no matter what.
I took the truck in today and the mechanic seems to think the rear springs are to flat or worn and the overload springs are bottoming out which you can see happening. he thinks the rear axle is twisting to much. Ever heard of this before?
I know those 7.3's are torquey but it sounds extreme to me if the springs aren't broken.
What did the PO tow with it.
Is it a suspension lift or a body lift?
He said he hauled a bass boat and a small travel trailer. It has a suspension lift.
Assumed that from the shaft alignment concern.
But I can't imagine it's sacked out from a bass boat.
There's no wedge to point the pinion yoke at the tailshaft?
This is more than likely the dreaded "Super Duty Clunk".
It's caused by the splines in the yoke (behind the carrier bearing) and the splines in the rear of the front driveline not fitting so well.
Over time the plastic coating that was installed at the factory gets worn down and the two mating parts gets sloppy.
You can disconnect the two drivelines, install some Teflon grease in the yoke, liberally, and re-install the shafts.
This will quieten it down for awhile, but it won't fix the problem.
I have to do this to my truck ever so often...because I don't want to change them out for a set that mates perfectly...yet.
Thanks for moving me over. It is good to on line. This is the first forum for me and it has been very helpful as well as a lot of fun checking things out.
Thanks for the feed back I am definitely going to try this. The truck has been great so far -other than the "clunk" and it made me a little paranoid. This is my first Ford and my first used vehicle in about 15 years and you just never know how people take care of their vehicles but this was the best one I found.Buying a truck that is 9 years old I did expect some things that would need some fixin I just did not know what to or how much to expect.
Any way I appreciate the info and look forward to spending some time on FTE.
Ford 4x4 owner- in order to become an accepted member here at FTE, you are REQUIRED to post pics of your new truck.
I'm also a new 99 F250 PSD owner, but mine has "just a few" more miles than yours. Check it out:
It's got 163K on the clock, but it is super clean- I'd have never bought it if it wasn't! The fact that I basically stole it didn't help much either Enjoy the new truck, and welcome to FTE!
BTW, I should warn you about a little thing called PMS (Powerstroke Modification Syndrome)- it WILL bite you, and beware when it does because once you're bitten it's hard to stop!
My 99 SD does the same thing, just as I am first starting to pull out from a dead stop, ETC.
I was concerned about it at first, but after reading the responses here, I am not going to worry about it. My rig has about 102K on it right now and runs great. I really don't even notice the "clunk" any more. If I'm ever bored, I may tear it apart and grease the splines, but if I don't get around to it, no big deal.
Ever since Ford Debued the Super Duty in 99 I always wanted one. Last year I was fortunate enough to find and purchase a very nice 99' and I am happy to say that it has not disspointed me at all. It's one heck of a good truck.
