...I'm looking for advice/suggestions on what movie maker software to look for. I'm looking at importing many .mov files, then editing them and laying them over a song (.mp3 format).

No preference for freeware v. shareware v. payware, though I prefer e-commerce and downloading as opposed to buying it in a box. (if they don't sell it at Walmart I gotta go to Texas to get it...bleh)
To combine two movies:
1. In QuickTime Player, choose Edit>Select All to select the entire contents of the first movie.
2. Choose Edit>Copy, then open the second movie.
3. Move the playhead to the point at which you want to insert the movie (usually the very beginning or end of the original movie), and choose Edit>Paste.
4. Choose File>Save As to name and save the new movie."
The be-all, end-all software for video editing on the PC is Adobe Premier, it's what the pro's use and can do just about anything you can imagine. However, it's almost $800 to buy. They do have a 30-day trial available on their website, but it's 680+ megs, so I hope you have a fast connection.
Get toaster and it will let you do special effects and editing etc. It is probably
available at downloads.com from C-net otherwise go to wikipedia and go to
their website from there.
