I have a '99 F150 w/ 4.2L V6. An AirAid intake has already been installed. I want to add cat-back dual-exhaust. I have been told that before I can add a new exhaust, I'd have to get a chip. Is this true? And if so, where can I find a Diablo chip for the 4.2L V6? I can only find the ones for the V8's.
You don't need a chip. I have cat-back and ran straight duels with glasspacks. I didn't have any problems other than a little loss in low-end torque. So I cut it off right behind the door and regained that torque. I haven't been able to find anything other than Jet chips for the 4.2L. And from what I have heard they aren't worth their weight in scrap. I think intake and exhaust are going to be you best bets. Has the intake helped you any?
Top end? Are wanting to run much over 100? I honestly don't know how much a chip will help your top end. If you have a buddy that is a tech they can play with it and remove the governor, then you can go as fast as the engine will let you. I'm looking at getting a CAI but I haven't heard that much about performance with the 4.2. They also seem to be kind of expensive so I might try and make my own.
Ya mine kicks on at 96mph. Thats going by the speedo. But I have a friend who is a chevy tech who bypassed the governor without using a chip. However, I don't know exactly what he did. He did this on both his 4.3L and his 5.3L. Now his 4.3L will run about 135 or so. I would assume that the same thing could be done with a Ford. But I don't know that for a fact. I'll try and get a hold of my friend and see how he did it
Its weird my truck has never had a chip put on it, but i have gone to at least 105 according to the speedo, and actual speed(according to GPS) at least 112.
I have no idea if the engine wears any differently. Obviously, it isn't going to last very long if you keep running it at 130mph. He has had it like this for about a year now and so far there aren't any problems or excess wear. It basically just lets you go as fast as you are willing to push it. There is still a rev limiter, so I don't think it will let it rev high enough to blow it up.
