Hello,
I am looking for a used Ford Escape for my wife and would appreciate any suggestions/comments from current Escape owners as to their overall opinion of this vehicle. Is this a reliable, relatively fuel efficient machine?
I plan on purchasing a 2002 or newer Escape with no more than 70,000 miles, V-6 engine, tow package, 4X4, and ABS. The vehicle would be our family's daily driver with occasional weekend duty pulling a light atv trailer.....max weight of 2000 lbs.
Are there any years that are better than others with this truck? 2003 vs 2005 for example? Thanks

ABS became standard across the line in 2005, the 4WD system was improved, and they moved to a floor, vs a column shifter (and did a slight cosmetic job). I believe ABS was optional on the earlier models (might have been standard on the Limited or something like that) and the way people buy cars, might be tough even finding a pre-05 with ABS. The '05 also had side/curtain airbags available as an option, which you couldn't get in the earlier models.
They also went to the 2.3 liter 4-cyl instead of 2.0 Zetec in 05, but that doesn't matter for you.
Think that's about it. I'd go with an 05 or newer for the sure-thing ABS and the better 4WD.
Mileage with the Duratec six and 4WD ain't *that* good but much better than, say, an Explorer. Dependability is fine on all years, and the 100k plug change on the Duratec is gonna cost some money.
one more thing: I think they went to 4 wheel disc brakes in 05 on the 6 cyl 4WD apps, so another thing in its favor, especially if you're gonna be towing.
I am not 100% on this, but I believe that 4-wheel disc brakes were offered in '05 but they are no longer an option. Thus, if you can find an '05 with 4-wheel discs that would be a plus. I have an '02 V6 FWD with the disc/drum set up and I tow a 2200 lb. boat and braking hasn't been a problem but you don't want to get cocky.

Only 4WD V6 Escapes had 4 discs standard in 2005-2007, plus all hybrids, FWD and 4WD.
For 2008, all non-hybrid Escapes have rear drums and the hybrids still all have 4 wheel discs.
Maybe done as a cost-cutting measure for 2008? I don't *really* think rear drums will be a big problem, and it may save you having to replace "potato chip" rotors on the back. But since you're looking for 4WD, V6, count on discs for 05-07 models.
My 01 3.0 XLT has ABS, side curtains, and rear drums. MPG isn't great but if you can afford to run ATVs, gas isn't your main concern. Oh yea, got over 100k on the ticker and it just now needs rear drums and shoes. Not doing them though, trading in as soon as 09s hit the lots. Towed PWC and jetboat all it's life just fine with no stopping issues.
Thanks for all the comments guys. Sounds like a 2005 or newer Escape is the way to go.
Pejeeper, Thanks for the info. Sounds like this vehicle is well built.
As for fuel mileage.....with gasoline prices predicted to hit $4.00/gallon, I am just as concerned as anyone about fuel efficiency. Why give any more than necessary to the oil companies or OPEC?
Ha! Ours rattles like my old jeep on a trail ride! "A new sound everyday" is the game my wife and I play. Most annoying is the random steering column rattle that cannot be typified or reproduced. Now there's an arm rest squeek so I can't lean like I used to. lol. still a good truck.
