Difference between 1990 and 1992....

Hey guys.

I have a 1990 F350. I am working on a stereo install and found these on Ebay... The earliest they offer for the F series is 1992. I am curious if anyone knows the difference between the 1990 and 1992 cabs and interior components..?

Well, based on what I saw yesterday while rummaging around through the pull-a-part yard, I think those would probably not work without some cutting. Not saying it can't be done, but read on:

If you'll notice, the hood release on your '90 is mounted behind that kick panel. Starting in '92 (I think!), it's under the steering column. Why they did that, I don't know. But it's there.

If you're not afraid to make some mods, I don't see why you can't get it done, but just proceed with caution.

My hood release is behind the kick panel by the emergency brake. I thought Ford did away with the under steering column hood release in 86. However, from what I have seen 92-96 kick panels are different from 87-91. So, it probably wouldn't work anyways. That picture is for a 97 up F150. Also, it looks like it will be in the way of the emergency brake going down all the way.

92 interior is completely different. They might work but would probably look funny. You could gut the whole interior and swap it though!

I'm thinking the '92 hood release is on the side panel just aft of that speaker.

well ... if you want to put this in your 1990 f350.... the hi-beam switch is right there on the floor, you would need to relocate it.... and the hood opener is on that pannel too,.....

...for a 1992 hi-beams are on the signal light/wiper leaver on the column
and the hood release is up where the ebrake release is, just over half a foot or so

Im in the process of doing this right now. Its not as easy as it sounds. There is a brace there on the 92-96s thats not their on the 87-91s. I KNOW it will work but there WILL be mods to be done.

GO FOR IT!!

I wouldn't think those would work at all for 92-96 due to the above reasons and... A. I would hit it, just cause I am a klutz. B. I would hit even trying not to, with clutch foot resting. C. Worst of all in snow/wet climates it would get wet from snow/rain. I have floor mats, and even though I tap my shoes before I get in, they get wet, and water will splash off of shoes/clutch pedal. D. In dry arid climates like the southwest, dust and sand, but mostly the dust would build up on there. and in there, due to them being at an upward angle, plus when it rains water could get on there etc...

These all aren't dealbreakers, but just something to consider when putting 100ish dollar speakers there. Car speakers "should" be designed for this kind of stuff, ie high heat, cold, wet, and dusy conditions, but unfortunately in todays manufacturering cost cutting world, they often aren't. Even Bose are manufactred in Mexico now.

Later,
Paul

After looking at that picture, I could not even imagine speakers down there. My truck is all plastic inside and I work in the mud. I hose it out with a garden hose (or the self serve car wash on special occasions). I would destroy those speakers in a week. How could anyone think of putting speakers there in a truck?
