Is anyone here a guru on the 418c carb? I have serious vacuum issues. I have the factory diagram on the truck but cant make heads or tails of it plz help
the truck takes about 25 mins to warm up in the morning before it will even attempt to take off in gear. If you dont let it warm up it will just stall when put in gear. also it kinda misses and backfires when you punch it. Also it will stall sometimes while taking off from a stop
Check the ignition timing, it should be set at about 10-14* BTDC. To check for vacuum leaks, use a can of spray carb cleaner and with the engine running, spray all around the intake/carb, if there's a leak, you'll hear the engine's idle change when the carb cleaner gets sucked into the hole. Do a tune up, new plugs, wires, cap, rotor. Check the accellerator pump arm clearance, look into the throttle bore under the choke and with the engine stopped, work the throttle lever and see if there's gas squirting into the bore when the lever is moved. There should be gas squirted as soon as the lever is moved. If not, then either the pump diaphram is busted, or there's too much slack in the pump arm linkage, you'll see an adjustment screw above the pump arm. Adjust till the slack disappears.

make surethe secondaries are working properly....they'll stick. The original carb on these engines can be a real bitch to get tuned right b/c most of them needed a rebuild rather soon (within 75000)
I just rebuilt the carb on my bosses 66Tbird 390 4V I wonder if thats the same one he has, I can't remember but the jets were clogged and I had to use a drill to clean them.... go easy fellows... I just used my fingers to spin the drill though.... stuff was hard as rock, make a huge difference. Got the kit at AutoZone

the original holley on the 351w were unique to the truck...some of them even said motrcraft on 'em and they flow 600cfm, if the one on your boss' 390 is the same as the one I got off a truck with a 390..it flows 780 cfm
here's what it looked like... had a 116 (I think) on the side, I think they had 3 different sizes all depends on that number thats stamped on the side, it was in a circle...

The 4100's came in two sizes---480 cfm and 600 cfm. Holley made a similar carb to it, called the 4010, these came in 600 and 750 if I'm not mistaken.

They weren't unique, same basic carb was used first on the 83-85 Stang HO 5.0. Truck 390's never got 780 cfm Holleys, if there was one there, someone other than Ford put it there. 390's only got 600 cfm carbs from Ford. The 428CJ's and a few other Hi-po Fords got 735's. I think one of the hi-po 429's might have gotten a 780, the Boss 302's did as well.
