differences between a 351 c/m/w????????
.....Yeah i know this may seem like a dumb question but i have learned more about
chevy motors and not that much about ford motors even though i am a FORD man all the way The 351C has traditionally been the performance 351 cu in engine, because there have always been hard-core performance parts available for it, even though some can be very pricey, whereas the 351w was neglected for a very long time with regard to high-performance arts availability. However, it is possible to build a powerful 351c or w, for example, a guy here in Australia put a 744hp naturally aspirated 351w into his 69 falcon. Similarly, outputs that high are achievable with a 351c (think NASCAR and pro stock drag racing).

OK - the 351W is the largest of the 289/302 family. The blocks are pretty decent, having thicker cylinder walls than the 351C. The heads are not very good compared to the 351C.
The 351C is the base engine of the Cleveland 335 engine family (which never had a 335ci engine in it - perhaps early plans that changed). It has about the best production heads ever made. The blocks are good except the cylinder walls are pretty thin and you can encounter overheating by only boring .030 over - in some cases.
The 400 is a stroked 351C with a raised deck (so intake is wider). They take the same heads as the 351C (some slight variations). The 400 is not known for high revs, but is known for low-end torque and lots of it. The engine is a sleeper as it was never shipped in performance trim. It has the best performance POTENTIAL of any engine I know of. The 400 takes the same crank design as the 351W - in fact if you put a 351W crank in a 400, you get...
... the 351M. In 1975, ford wanted to retire the 351C but wanted a 351 engine in the 335 family - so they stuck a 351W crank in the 400 block and then they could discontinue the 351C crank, block, rods, pistons, intake, etc. I've never seen it in print - but sure seems like a production cost issue in retrospect. The 351M is a compromise - the long rods hamper revs without the benefit of the cubes of the 400. Simple fix if you are stuck with a 351M - swap the crank, rods (or is it pistons - can never recall which) and turn it into a 400.
Some have taken the Cleveland heads and machined them to fit a 351W and called it a Clevor. For me, if you have a choice of all of the above I would go with the 400 for the street, but a 351C for the strip. The difference is the revs - 400 is great for street performance or low-rev pulling. The 351C revs nicely , particularly with the 4V heads. I've probably told you more than you wanted to know...
>fit. having said that. the 351m is a destroked 400. the

I'm not saying you are wrong, but I was quoting the American V8 Engine Data Book (p133).

You have to call them tho, they don't list the parts online or in their catalog. They have trick heads already modified and rebuilt if you want them also. The std heads are real easy and cheap to get and the modifications are simple.
