from what i can figure so far it is not in the door switch being all the lights shut off when i close it, and that switch in the door controls the lights and everything all in one unit, i believe. i do think the problem may be in the ignition where you slide the key in. i think there is a "pin" or something the key presses on when in the ignition, and then releases when you remove the key. i believe the "pin" is sticking. any other ideas??? thanks

There is a small "switch" on the bottom of the ignition cylinder that is "made" when the key is inserted.

Yours has stuck in the "made" position.

Do you happen to know the fix? does the cylinder need replacing, or can it be fixed by taking the cylinder out and adjusting anything? thanks

I've got an 02 Expedition and this happens to me often (but not always). The issue with mine is that the ignition thinks the key is still in, meaning I can still turn it even with the key out (though it won't start due to security system). My solution is just to wiggle the ignition back and forth until it gets into the correct spot and the chime stops. I guess the true fix would be to correct the sensor that determines whether the key is in or not, but it's not a big deal for me so I haven't looked into it.

I usually fix mine by just clipping the wire and eliminating the problem for good. I just loose the reminder feature.

My brother's 99 Crown Vic does the same thing. He takes the key out and the "ding...ding...ding" continues. He just taps the steering column with his fist and it stops dinging.
