I want to put a 351 in my truck. It has a 300 in it right now. I haven't decided on a C or W motor, but I want to ask about the C right now. I figure a forged crank in a 2 bolt block, I don't think the 4 bolt will be necessary. A set of forged .010 over pistons maybe. I'd like a gear set turning a cam with around 280 deg duration on a 110 degree center (cuz it's between 112 and 109). I think .500 lift or so. I was thinking about keeping the stock heads and porting them, with hardened valve seats and bigger valves. A single plane intake, with a Quadrajet (I've seen Holley's stall at big angles). What do you think?
well think about a 351m/400. all the "c" thinking applies and these are easier to find, and the difference between the 2 are crank and pistons. if you want a stump puller, you want a 400.
Also, there is no need to spend money on a forged crank. The stock crank is plenty strong enough, but have the bearing surfaces micro-polished and the oil holes chamferred
GO WITH THE 400!!! My 400 has 451 ft/torque and it was under $2000. The 351c is a car motor. It will work just fine for you if you have one. If you are heading to the junk yard to buy a short block, the 400 will be cheaper than the 351c.
I know you guys hate to hear it, but if you want a good, grunting, stump pulling truck keep the 300 and find a tranny with a low (granny) first gear. You can pull houses down. The 300 isn't fast by any means but it loves to dish out low end torque. I have to brag because this-afternoon my nieghbor was having a hard time with an old pine stump on his property. This stump was laughing at his 99 F150 4.6L. All he was doing was digging ruts with the rear wheels. I backed in my 80 F-100, dropped it in low, and rolled off the clutch. The next thing we heard was roots popping. Of course, if I want to go over 75 mph I have to get out and push. But that's OK. It's not a travelling truck. I just love being able to pull stumps, boats, trailers, even other vehicles like there's nothing on it. Have fun - BUBBA
