ok i got a question. i have a 400m .30 over trw pistons, comp cams kit 268h, deck .10under, heads .10under,now for the ? factory sets the timing 4deg retard, most people set it to zero, what if i set mine to 4 deg advanced? what are thr pro's and con's to this?
Comp Cams' cams usually instll 4 degrees advanced when you install them " straight up ". They are ground that way. That's one of the reasons they feel so much more powerful. 4 degrees advanced might take a little off the top but should add a lot to the bottom end. BTW installing the stock cam straight up or advanced on a smog motor makes a big difference in power.
I read some post on this a few months back, but was still a little confused. Does it require getting a different timing set to set the timing "straight up" or is it a different way of aligning the timing marks of the cam and crank sprockets? I know that the performance aftermarket timing sets can be degreed, but what about stock. Thanks in advance for clearing this up for me.
In the early 70's Ford started retarding the cam to help pass emissions regs. Most of the time you can backdate to an earlier timing set to install the cam where it belongs ( makes a lot of difference in bottom end torque ).
