so far this year my truck has made over 6xxx repairs and maintane 200$,2hyd hoses ,1seliond on plow, engin oil 2 times, tranny oil and filter 1 time probly 1000$ for fule. happy, happy,joy,joy...
for the cost of a setup on my superduty its looking like i can go buy a whole plow truck. what are your guys' thoughts?
You sure can, but have fun with it when it breaks
If you have the time/tools/work space to work on a old beater plow truck, that is a great way to go to save money, and keep your truck in good condition, but it sucks when something happens such as losing 4x4 in the middle of a snow storm and you get stuck in a snow pile
You can find used plows for good prices too, they last a really really long time if well maintained the one I have is over 11 years old and works as good as when we got it, only thing it needs finally is a paint job.
yup. one of my Meyers C-8 plows is 44 years old, and still pushing strong. but it is about time to replace some of the struts, and put a 1 foot square segment in the mole board.
I've had my SD plowing for 2 years now, I've never had to go through and replace a bunch of stuff in the spring. The most I've had to do is do a brake job on her last fall.
I didn't buy my truck new, she was used, with a used plow.
1) When changing gears, come to a complete stop. That will save the tranny thats for sure.
2) Wear your seatbelt! Some guys will prob say they never do. However, you hit a man hole cover, or a pot hole and the truck gets hung up you will smash yourself against the wheel. Its hard to plow with broken ribs!
Don't be afraid, especially if it's just your own yard! You didn't mention if you were planning on plowing commercially or just your own yard. I have a 2000 F150, 4.6L, 3.55 and have been plowing my yard (400' driveway and area around a 40 x 80 building for about 5 years now. Put a small 7.5' Fisher RD on it. Works fine. No plowing related problems yet...but you don't want to try to muscle it around with the smaller truck. Truck has 120K on it now and I'm ready to trade it. Will probably go with a 3/4 ton, 8', HD...
I have a 05 SD350 single cab with a fisher HD 8ft straight edge plow. This year would be my second year using this truck to push snow. The first year, no problem however there was a lack of snow back in 06 for us. Well, I did run into one issue; I had tranny fluid vent out of the tranny, til this day I don't know why.
But this year is another story. Currently I am going through some front end issues. A rumbling noise; it use to start at about 30mph but yesterday it starts at about 15mph and above. I think the problem is caused by the hauling of the plow from my house to my store, which is about a 45min drive @ 40-55mph.
From what I have learn, use ballast and don't depend too much on the 4x4 as you will where it down prematurely.
It sounds like a hub assembly could be going out, jack the front up and check for play by grabbing top & bottom of tire and try and move it. If it moves its bad just make sure the play is in the bearing and not the ball joints. When mine went out it didn't have play in it right away just rumbled but after a short time play developed.
i have an 04 with a 8 1/2 ft fischer straight mm plow, been plowing with it since i got it at 19k and the previous owner plowed. just had to do the ball joints at 40k and i blew one hyd. line so far. the sd is by far the best truck to plow with
