Remember that laptop parts are proprietary..

This makes it hard to find parts sometime. Also parts are more expensive than desktop parts..

I have replaced fans in desktops for as little as $10.00 for the part and have replaced them in laptops for $80.00 when I could find them..

I have run across a few that parts were not available for..

Also if you are set on a laptop make sure you get the longest warranty they offer. It will be money well spent..

Just my 2 cents
Hear ya. I was running on the assumption that a laptop was a required. I prefer desktops if possible as well for that very reason.

One thing my parents did was find someone like Don who comes to their house and troubleshoots everything between the keyboard and the DSL line. For them it's worth it, because Dad runs his business out of a home office. May be a bit overkill for you, Pat, but what you will get if you find a good one is someone who will look at - and maybe even think about - your individual problem and the best individual solution for it, rather than someone running off a checklist and trying to sell a new HP with a bunch of annoying proprietary caca on it. My Dad went with the cheap, recyclable PC for a while but then decided it was less hassle to get the non-brand desktops put together by builders and small shops.

You should also stay away from a laptop because you'll find yourself sitting up in bed yakking with a bunch of useless Ford Freaks instead of reading something constructive, talking to your wife, etc.!!! </blah blah blah></BLAH blah>
