Interesting. You would think all it would take is a visit to the Social Security office. Typical government red tape. I would sue somebody if I was on the brink of losing my home because someone miss typed a SSN.
Because I'm asked for my birthday by the IRS when I try to file electronically. If I give them the real one, they tell me it doesn't match SS and when I give them the day SS thinks it is, they tell me it doesn't match the IRS records.
I've never had a problem filing by mail, but the electronic filing causes an issue every year. I finally gave up and didn't even bother trying to file electronically this year.
Yeah, I have a dislike of wasting my time sitting in line, so I haven't bothered. The only time it's ever presented a problem is when I try to file taxes electronically, so I don't feel the need to deal with it.
Furthermore, who knows what the proper documentation is? If a person who's not dead can't get it fixed, even though they show up at the SS office, what hoops do you suppose I'll have to go through to prove that I was born on a different day then they say?

It's just not worth the trouble...
I'd start with a notorized copy of my birth certificate.

Why your birth certificate, 3Mike6?
Why not ShamelessMT's birth certificate? (I know what you meant)
That would be a good start, because you (ShamelessMT) may need the proper
DOB registered when you try to retire, or need any assistance concerning these agencies.
It would be very cool if the IRS thought I was dead and my employer thought I was alive. I could actually take home what they say they pay me and I could deal with my own "social security".
