Alright so I went out today and bought a big ol' jug of Diesel Kleen. How exactly does this stuff work, what exactly is it supposed to do, and is it a worthwhile investment? Also, I was looking at some Engine Restore. Its the stuff that gets added when you change the oil, and its supposed to be a miracle in a can. Anybody used this? Recommend it?
can't say one way or the other on the engine restore. known lots of people used it in gassers but never heard of it in a diesel. on the dieselkleen however that's some good stuff. it's good to boost the cetane rating of the diesel and get you a bump of power. also good to have as IP lubricant since we've been forced to use the ULSD fuel. i know that some folks are saying that the ULSD won't make an older IP fail from lack of lubricant, but i have noticed that my '90 just don't like the stuff at all. i'm mixing 8 ounces of dieselkleen and 1/2 ounce of low ash two-stroke oil per 18 gallon tank when i fill up. seems to make it run better, maybe a little quieter. have noticed about 1/2 to 1mph using this. i've seen where others are running a little more, some run a little less. i personally think it's a good thing for what it's worth.
Yeah, that Engine Restore stuff says its good for diesels and gassers. Just wondering if that is something that would be a good idea or a waste of time.
Diesel Kleen is good stuff. I mix it with straight #2 diesel - 1 ounce per every 3 gallons (that is the 96 ounce bottle to treat 300 gallons of fuel as recommended on the bottle). If I can get B20 I don't add any Diesel Kleen to it though. The biodiesel in any concentration above about B6 provides all the cleaning and lubrication the pump & injectors need.
RESTORE on the other and is something I tried and will never use again. I put two 16 ounce cans in a 10 quart oil change to see if it would help reduce my blowby, and I think the crap actually made it worse...
CheaperJeeper, would making the blowby worse have anything to do with now many miles are on an engine or the age/condition of the compression rings? just curious as i've never used it. if it makes it worse, i sure don't need that. finally got the hemorrhaging stopped on my oil leaks and don't want to start with another one. LOL BTW, does the B20 seem to run as well as #2 diesel with the dieselkleen? we don't have ready availibility to it here yet, but there's always the hope.

Well, blowby is the result of rings not sealing well in the cylinders - either due to being worn and/or rings that are gummed up and stuck in the piston ring grooves. Either way they aren't sealing well.
I'm thinking (hoping) that in my case the blowby is mostly due to the rings being gunked up, and that is why the RESTORE stuff didn't help. I'm thinking it may have just gunked 'em up even more. That is why I drained the oil with the RESTORE in it out of my engine, replaced it with clean oil, and added a couple of bottles of AutoRX. If the problem is worn rings & cylinders, maybe the RESTORE stuff would have helped more.
At least that is what I'm hoping and theorizing. If my problem is that they are all gummed up, then the AutoRX ought to help more since it dissolves the gunk and cleans the inside of the engine (including the rings) S-L-O-W-L-Y as you drive.
As far as I can tell, the B20 runs just as good or better than #2. It has about 5% lower BTU value than straight #2, BUT it also has slightly higher cetane value so it is about a wash as far as I can tell. Seems to run a little smoother, and the exhaust definitely smells better - less of a "petro-chemical" and more of an "organic" smell....
ULSD will hurt our IPs if we dont use additive when I bought mine didn't add any it started blowing white smoke found out my IP was probly stickin gave it a heavy dose of diesel kleen cleared up been useing the regular dose ever since.
With the Diesel Kleen, should I add 8oz. per tank or 4oz. per since I have 2 tanks? By the way, what is my fuel capacity? Ive got a 90 F-250 7.3 4x2. I have dual tanks, but I'm not sure what the capacity is.
