IS THIS A GOOD KIT OR SHOULD I GO A DIFFERRENT ROUTE?

Crane Cams 52655-16
Rocker Arm Conversion Kit, Guideplate, 37/16/20 in. Stud, Pedestal to Adjustable Rocker Arm, Ford, V8, Kit
These rocker arm guideplate conversion kits from Crane allow you to convert engines with pedestal-mount rocker arms into adjustable-type valvetrains, without machine work or cylinder head removal.

I believe that the Crane setup uses a 5/16" stud. Most stud mount rockers use a 7/16" stud. The Scorpion rockers use a 5/16" bolt, but the bolt doen't see the motion like a stud.

The Crane 5/16" studs tend to flex a little when opening and closing the valves. The Scorpion pedastal mount rocker is more stable. I used the Crane conversion with my 351C-4V heads and it was OK. I am still using the Crane Roller rockers now with CHI heads and 7/16" studs.

BTW, I still have the Crane kit with the instructions. I have been trying to sell it. If you want to go in that direction, send me an email or a PM. You can save some money.

Just want to be sure you understand the difference between the pedestal mount (non adjustable) rocker arms and the so-called "stud mount" (adjustable) rocker arms.

The heads came from the factory set up for the pedestal mount rockers. These can be replaced with "roller" rockers, but they too must be pedestal mount. The Scorpions you saw on eBay are just that - pedestal mounted, roller rockers. They are NOT adjustable, but since they locate with the pedestals, they DO NOT require guide plates. Only the stud mount rockers need guide plates.

As danlee pointed out, if you mill the heads, you will either need custom length (shortened) push rods, or you will need adjustable rocker arms. Most all adjustable rocker arms are the "stud mount" variety, which require you to either run the rocker arm conversion kit, or have your heads machined, to remove the pedestals and open up the mounting holes for the larger 7/16" studs.

The only true "adjustable" pedestal mount rocker arms I have ever seen (you can shim non-adjustable rockers to change lifter preload) are the "Angus Racing" models that pop up on eBay from time to time. These don't adjust like the typical stud mount rockers - they actually have adjustable pushrod seats on them, presumably to allow you to adjust the location of the pushrod cup on the rocker arm (if you were running custom length pushrods, for example). You could run these rocker arms with the stock pedestals, and at least have some measure of "adjustment" for the shorter custom pushrods, one would assume. I have NO experience with these rockers, and searching the boards doesn't turn up much else in the way of information. They do look a lot like the Comp Cams aluminum roller rockers, but again I've never actually seen one of the Comp Cams units with the adjustable pushrod seat.

The Scorpion rockers can also be shimmed to adjust them.

You also need a pushrod length checker. It's an adjustable pushrod that you use to find the right length pushrod, before you order 16 too long or 16 too short pushrods. They come in different length ranges.

If you want the conversion kit, I can sell you one that is slightly used. Just PM or email me. It includes 16 conversion studs and 16 conversion guide plates. I had no problem with it. I just changed heads to heads without pedastals.

Roller rockers offer an advantage over stock type rockers other than performance in that they reduce the wear on the valve guides by eliminating the rocking motion on the valve stem.

You should be able to use your old pushrods with the conversion kit. The rockers are adjustable, and the kit allows you to use non-hardened pushrods.
