CD player not working

Does anyone have any experience with a malfunctioning CD player in an AM/FM Cassette/CD Radio1998-0X? Have you had any luck repairing the CD player yourself? Has anyone had the CD player repaired or is it so expensive that you are better off getting a new radio?

Thanks.....Ed

Hi Ed! Hope all is well.

What's wrong with the CD player? Are you getting the CD "EJECT ERROR"?

Hey Rockledge-good to hear from you!
I bought a radio whose display was not working and the CD would not play. I took it apart to fix the power board-soldered all contact points and the display started working. When a CD was inserted, it did not play and then it was ejected. AS the cover was still off, I could see that the disk was not spinning. I manually rotated the disc and it started to spin on its own and there was a lot of sound distortion and never sounded right. I turned the radio off and decided I would resume on another day. I was using my 2001 for a power source. When I tried to power it on the bench, the heat sink on the back of the radio heated up so I assumed the speakers I was using were a different impedence so I had to go back to the truck. When I next went back to the truck, the display at first did not come on, then it came on for a while, the CD tried to start but didn't get up to speed. I just let the radio play and didn't bother with the CD. I went back half hour later, the display was still on. The next day, the display would not come on so I took the power supply out again. This time while resoldering one of the resistors, the resistor flew off the board-I think that means the other end was loose. I managed to find the resistor and resolder it. The display has worked well ever since. When I put in a CD, it balked for a little while, then started up slowly, then played at proper speed with distortion. I let the CD play for 3-4 hours. It continued to run and gradually the distortion cleared. It has been playing well ever since. My questions are...does anybody know how power is supplied to the CD player and could the problem be lack of lubrication from non-use? From what I have seen on eBay and various forums, it seems that many displays fail and it is rare to have the CD fail. I was wondering if anybody has had a display failure the same time as a CD failure. If it was a power failure problem, it had to be only partial because the CD player would accept and eject the disc even though it wouldn't spin or play.
Mostly, I am interested in hearing from others what their experience has been with regard to display and CD player failures.

The 6 disc in dash in my focus jammed once and I fixed that myself but I havent had one that wouldn't play. IMHO the factory units are junk anyway and you are better off spending $300 on an aftermarket cd player than you are to spend money on another OEM unit. I left the OEM in my Focus as that is the wife's daily driver but everything else I have gets new aftermarket stuff but I generally put in a big system anyway.
