I just found this site and it is awesome. After reading some of the info about heads I decided to check out the extra heads that came with my truck (80 F250 4X4 with 351M) when I bought it 6 years ago. There are 3 heads, 2 of them are 351C 2V heads (D1AE with 2 in the upper corners) and the other is a 351M head (D5AE). The only problem is both the C heads are for the driver side of the engine and the M is for the passenger side. Anyone want to swap a passenger side 351C head for the extra driver side I have?
OK I'll bite .. What makes a head a driver side head and a passenger side head ???
By rights they are all the same, one just goes on the driver side and the other goes on the passenger side .
I was wondering about that when I looked at the heads. Both heads have threaded holes on one end, I guess that end goes toward the front for mounting accessories. When I lay the heads side by
side with the threaded holes facing forward the intake ports do
not face each other. To get the intake ports to face each other one of the heads has to be turned around so the threaded holes face the rear, this will not work because the alternator can't be bolted to the head on that side. If I turned the other one around then I wouldn't be able to bolt the power steering pump to the head. Of course it was kind of dark when I looked at the heads but I think the threaded holes were only on one end of the heads, I'll look again when I get home.

I have a set of 351C 2V heads on my 400. They are 1974 castings but they are definitely C heads. Before I even took them to the machine shop much less installed them on the block I triple checked to make sure all of the accessory holes matched up with the M heads on the 400 that is being replaced. There's no such thing as a right & left or driver's side & passenger's side head that I've ever seen. Both heads should be drilled & tapped on both ends for the appropriate accessories. The driver's side will have the end with 4 threaded holes facing forward and the passenger's side will have a single threaded hole.
Oops...my mistake. As noted above the heads have 4 threaded holes on one end and 1 threaded hole on the other. Date codes show one head built October 1970 and the other December 1972.
The heads will still work either way. The bolt holes won't be a problem. If you look at your alternator and power steering pump they mount different. Some need 3 holes some need 1 hole. So when you toss the heads on you'll only need 3 on 1 side and 1 on the other Unless your running something other than stock accessories.
