Iac???

I was wondering if my IAC is bad does is affect my engine at 1500rpms, I know it controls the idle, but my engine is chugging every once in a while and my rpms are constantly at 550 at idle. I was just wondering if the IAC can effect anything above idle rpms??

thanks
nick

PS what does a 5.4L usualy idle at??

You might be able to clean it and fix your problem.
Do yourself a big favor, DONT buy a Advance Auto or Autozone IAC, go to NAPA or Ford to get one. I bought one for my truck, and it didnt fix my problem, and i waited too long to take it back, so i wasted $70.

What do you consider "Horable Gas Mileage"?
I get about 12 mpg average, and around 10mpg towing a truck or tractor on a trailer.

A bad IAC doesn't effect much over 1500 rpm's. If it sits there doing the chug a lug at 550 rpm's for 10 minutes, yes maybe use a little more gas. Once off Idle going down the road, a bad IAC won't be noticed, your primary air thru the throttle body is running the truck and the computer. What is bad mileage in your idea? Mine gets 12.5-13mpg in the Winter, gas has alcohol in it, hauls weight each day as a work truck, all is in tune.

Yeah... that's bad. As someone mentioned start looking for vacuum leaks first. Then proceed to good connections at sensors, etc.. Always start with the basics and proceed. You gotta' be tossin' a CEL with this kinda' mileage? Does your CEL illuminate when you turn the key on to show it is not burned out? When was the last time it had plugs changed? Look closely at all the fittings around and related to the PCV. Test and eliminate as you go, many guys here can figure it out if you provide good explanations of what you are trying. If you just say "help me" you'll just get random responses , like I have given. Good Luck... and stick with it!

The PCV is in the passenger side valve cover. Follow the hose to the back of the engine. The problem is usually in the 90 degree bend at the back of the intake manifold. Good luck!

Look for the PCV in the passenger side valve cover. With the engine running pull the valve out of the grommet. Put your finger over the bottom and it should"Suck" onto your finger. If not, pull off the valve and see if the line itself is sucking. If so the PCV is shot. IF the line does not suck either, the line is plugged or cracked. Make sure the grommet around the PCV is not cracked or brittle. Follow the line up to the plenum and check for cracks. Be careful of moving belts and the usual hazards of testing items with the engine running. If you don't have a Chiltons or the like, your local library has one. See page 1-32 of the Chiltons 1997-2002 book. Good Luck... Ohh... you must be in construction like me, I always want to call it the PVC also (ha...ha..)

If you suspect a coolent or temp. sensor, first make sure the cooling system itself is good... i.e... Coolent level is correct, thermostat working, etc. A lot of sensors are easy to test right on the vehicle if you have a book and a simple volt meter. A repair book will also tell you how to check for codes that were tossed. I just can't believe you are getting 6-7mpg and no CEL. You have something major going on to reduce your mileage that far. Have you used the search function here to bounce around and get some ideas? Problems like this have been around many times. Good Luck...

I'm assuming that it is cold where you are at... so maybe your truck is overcooling and never getting to operating temp. Even if the factory gauges say its warmed up it may not be, you cant really trust ford gauges .

Also when was the last time filters(fuel and air) were changed?

How long are your trips you make in your truck? Short or Long?

Have you turned the ignition on and checked to see if the bulb for the check engine light works or not?

And the only other thing i could think of is maybe your calculating your mileage wrong...?
