I have a friend who rebuilt his 390 recently and put a Mallory Unilite distributer in, he said the new distributor lets his motor wind up another 1500 RPM and do it a lot faster, he said it was well worth the money.

If a stock distributor (non points) is curved correctly for your motor, then I say no, in most cases you wont see any difference with over an aftermarket one. In stock form, god only knows how horrible the factory advance is setup. It is modifiable. Do a search for Duraspark distributor re-curve. If you fix your distributor, and upgrade your ignition system, you probably will see some improvement. If you are allergic to figuring out wiring, the HEI style distributor will work good.
