Hi I'm new hear and hopefully this is the right forum for this, Heres my problem I did a cab swap, I put a 1979 Ford F150 (4x2 400 ci engine auto)cab on a 1974 Ford F100 shortbox (4x2 289 4spd) everything went well till I tryed to start it. Started fine but when I back the key to run mode the starter stayed ingaged what is up with that??The only way I could get this to stay started without running out and disconnecting the brown wire from the starter relay?? So what my friend did was swapped the orange and brown wire from the starter relay and spliced into the brown wire to put in a pushbutton switch (in cab) to start the truck every time?? Works but I want to make it a turn key!
Did it start cranking before you turned the key to the start position?
I'm going off of memory, but I believe there should be a Red/ Blue wire to the S terminal at the solenoid. The Brown wire should go to the I terminal. I can't remember on the pickups, but on the Broncos, the orange wire is the Field wire from the alternator to the Regulator.
Sorry RCrawler I rechecked my pics for my truck and I made the mistake , the wire the he removed was a brown wire and a red /blue wire. My mistake and thanks for helping....
Sorry RCrawler it was that way when he first started the wires were red/blue on the S terminal and the brown was on the I terminal (when you say solinoid you mean starter relay?)thats the way it was when the starter was engaging ?? So he swapped them around and spliced into the brown which now is on the S terminal for the push button switch in the cab?? If that makes sence?? Thanks

Thanks In advance 74 Forder.
mine was doing that when I got it (79 f150 4x4 351m). I changed the relay and everything is good now. Just a thought
You're starter relay is the most likely problem. They don't have to stick on at every start. Just from lack of use mine does it every now and then,I have to diconnect the battery to stop starter, hook it back up and it may not do it again for weeks. There only about 15-or 20 bucks so cheap fix.

Yeah, but with the original wire bypassed to the push button, it is working.
Do you have a constant 12V or a ground at the Red/Blue wire?

My truck is currently in boxes , so I'm going from memory . There is only one wire connected to the solonoid pins, I belive it's the brown one on the pin closest to the battery looking at the solonoid from above. Some replacements solonoids require a ground from the other pin to chassis in order for it to work, which is the type I have on mine. As far as I can remember the red wire is not connected. To check just get a test light and check both wires for power ONLY when the key is in the start position, there should be no power in the run position. This will eliminate the wiring colour problem and my memory at the same time.
The brown wire supplies 12V to the ignition for easier starting. With the engine running, you should see 6-8V there from the resistor wire to the coil.
Are you using the wiring harness and ignition from the 79?
Thanks guys for all the help. Yes NOCO77 i did use the ignition from the 79. RCrawler I'm not sure if there is 6-8v from the resistor to the coil? I'll have to check later when wifey comes home..Dusty all your saying is to take off the red wire and leave it off and hook a ground wire to the I pin of the starter relay?? Thanks huys
Check the red/blue wire. Should have 12V only in crank position. If you release the key from the crank position and you still have 12v, I would suspect the ign switch or a wiring/ switch issue if you mixed and matched.
Hey RC I didn't get to try anything to my truck today but I did get to upload some pics of my truck to my Gallery.I have the pic of the starter relay mess Remember I had to swap the brown wire with the red/blue one and put in a push button switch I did start the truck tonight with the red/blue wire off and not hooked to anything else and it started fine??But still not a turn key??
