Tranny Swappin

I have an 87 f-250, 460, 4-speed, and I was wondering for the sake of fuel efficiency and less rpms on the motor, are there and overdrive 5-speeds that are a direct bolt-in

Yeah its a (ZF) 5 speed it the stroger 5 speed but you need other parts to make it work like flywheel, crossmember, clutch pedal ,drive shafts clutch.

Its best to get a doner truck to do the swap.

So you are saying it uses a different flywheel than the 4-speed? and why would the clutch pedal need replaced?

the 4 speed and the 5 speed have different parts.. hydraulic clutch on the 5 speed, different clutch disk / flywheel, clutch pedal because the linkage is different.

The four speed also has a hydraulic clutch, but it's external to the bell whereas the ZF has a concentric clutch.

You probably can re-use the clutch pedal, but I'm not sure about the master cylinder. The slave, flywheel, and clutch kit all need to be replaced.

It's a lot of hassle for not much of a gain in mileage. You might get 1 or 2 mpg out of it. After all, you're still driving a 460.

Sorry I miss read I thought it was auto....you would be fine with the flywheel. you would just need a clutch kit and a new clutch master cylinder, slave cylinder and new line . The pedal would be fine as well.
