Class II to Class III

Can you change the tailer hitch on an 06 mercury mountaineer?

I have a Class II and I need a Class III, But I want it to be the stock Mercury.

thanks,
Brad

The receiver hitch can be changed, but you won't have the 7-pin connector with a controller plug under the dash, 3.73 rear gears, or an engine oil cooler if your Mountie has the 4.0L V6.

If you're going to tow a trailer with electric brakes, that plug lets you install a brake controller. The V8 didn't require an engine oil cooler with the tow package. Your rear gears are 3.55 without the tow package; if you have an Owner's Guide, look up the difference in tow ratings.
