1993 Explorer - cold tranny problem
Summer - no problem.
Winter - reverse works fine, but forward does not engage until engine has warmed up for 20 minutes or more (I put the truck into gear, but it does not move).
I had the tranny serviced last fall (new fluid, filter, gasket, inspection) but tech did not notice any mechanical problems. He suggested re-build if the service did not solve problem.
The gear selector needle does not line up with D, so I usually have to fiddle with the selector to get it into gear.
Any suggestions on problem/solution?
Is it the correct one, is it fitted square(sucks air from above fluid if installed crooked or not fit correctly), clean?
Running "REDLINED" means it is slipping and so will burn and die.... P
If the fluid level is fine, it means either a problem with the valve body, or the bands are slipping and need to be replaced. Some people will simply adjust the bands, but by the time they have worn enough to start noticeably slipping, they are very thin (they are thin to begin with). If you tighten them, they will mask their failure. There are 3 stages of a bands life. The first stage is when they are new. The surfaces are strongly bonded friction materials that don't allow much slippage. The second stage is that when they start slipping, the surface begins to scorch, and once the surface begins to break down it enters the third phase. The third stage is the shed phase, where the material has been compromised and begins to self destruct. The material that bonds the friction particles together no longer has the strength to hold itself together.
