regear or replace?

i just got my truck on the road yesterday and i have found out that i can only get up to 80km @ 2000 rpm. the truck is a 1968 F-250 4x4, 360, np435, dana 24, dana 44 front and a dana 60 rear with 4.10 gears. i dont want to regear the diffs, but does someone have a kit than gears the transmisson? i have seen overdrive units but i dont like the price of them (just spend $2600 rebuilding the motor). if there is no kit to regear the transmission, what other transmission will fit in than has an overdrive gear in it?

any ideas will help

Not sure what it takes to fit a late model 5spd(bellhousing). Not sure how cheap that route will be either.

Pretty sure they don't offer any kind of gear changes for original tranny.

Bolt on overdrive's aren't cheap, but not sure how well it works for 4wd versions? You have divorced case right? Probably no room for unit anyway.

hey 80kn is about 50 mph right? If you are turning that at 2 grand, that is not bad at all.

I turn 2050 at 55 mph with my 3.00 gear,

You have to set it up one way or the other, do you want to pull stumps or get mpgs?

80k/hr approx 50 mph

http://www.onlineconversion.com/speed_common.htm

With your gears, you must have approx 34 inch tires to turn 2000 rpm at that speed.

http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/gearing.htm

If that is all correct, that is about 2633 rpm at 65/mph-105kph. Not screaming, yet.

If you want OD, the GV unit is about $3000, you may know about it.
http://www.gearvendors.com/

Or a 5 speed. It wouldn't make sense to try to fit a ZF from a late model Ford into your truck. The integral bell would require an adaptor, them ain't cheap. Enter the NV4500. Scroll down here:

http://www.motivegear.com/tech_info/tranny_guide/tranny_guide.html

This outfit has info and sells them and the adaptor. (bell to trans adaptor, well, it's marginally better than bell to engine...)

http://www.high-impact.net/nv4500.htm#NV4500ConversionsFordTruck

They also sell and OD between the bell and trans, about half the cost of the GV, but do some homework, I've seen some negative comments about these:

http://www.high-impact.net/transmiss...roverdrive.htm

So, with the NV4500 tucked under your truck, 5th is now .73 which will give you:

1480 rpm at 50 mph/80Kph
1922 rpm at 65 mph/105kph

These are just links I've found, I know NOTHING about them other than the obvious, so assess carefully.

Good luck.

PS please tell us you put a 390 crank/rods/pistons in that slug of a 360....

Put some big tires on it! Larger diameter is cost effective way to speed up the gear ratio, especially if you like them anyway. My 68 with 4.10/11 gears runs down the highway real well.

It appears he already has 34 inch tires. After about 30-32 inches, I think the bigger tires start costing you mpg even if they do slow the engine down.
