5W-20 engine oil???

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 13-Dec-01 AT 09:23 AM (EST)]Could you tell us which Ford dealership you work at? Or show us some documentation which says to use 6 quarts? I would assume you would have that being a manager. Not that I don't believe you, but I have been to 2 dealerships, a Jiffy Lube and a Havoline Quik Lube Center, and all have used 7 quarts. 6 is at the regular price and something like $3 on average for the additional quart. With out fail, always 7 quarts. And on both my 99 F-150 and my 86 F-250, that fills just a little more than midway on the cross hatching on the dipstick. Like I said, I'm not saying you're lying or anything, but it does seem a little odd to me anyways that a brand new member with this as the only post comes here after this discussion was supposedly dropped a while back other than the 5-20/30 discussion. I would seriously like to see the tech manual which says to use 6 quarts of oil. So if you could post it on a link, or have a link to check it out that would be great.

Ryan

Ok Sr,MGR.
If all above you say is True...
Isn't Ford Motor Company a ISO 9002 Registered company?
If that is true. Your Dealership and Ford Are Probably not in accordance with what ever the criteria mentioned in your registration.
Or did Ford just write their criteria for this oil level issue with Wide open areas for all of us to guess at.
If the Dip stick is wrong, showing the full mark. it should be modified and the guidlines stated TO THE TEE... what the oil level instructions should be. Not "A Safe Operating Level"..
Simple as this:
Your new Supercrew takes 7 quarts of oil.
This will fill it to the full mark.

OR..(Install a new Dipstick newer than the 1977 dip stick used in the LTD's).
Your new Supercrew takes 6 quarts of oil.
This will Fill it to the full mark.

5W-20 engine oil???

I have a 1993 EB Explorer I bought new. Switched over to Mobil 1 10-30W synthetic at 8K and have used it ever since. My Explorer now has 115K miles on it now (about 30K hard towing) and still does not use over 1/2 qt. between changes, which are every 4K miles. My next new vehicle will probably be a 5.4 Supercrew. I plan to use Mobil 1 5-30W in it, due our hot Texas summer weather, which often is usually between 100-112 degrees. That kind of heat, when towing and loaded, with the A/C on, is mighty tough on an engine. So high quality oil, of the right viscosity, is a must. Mike

i change my own oil and always have. my 2001 5.4l supercrew with tow package takes 6.75 quarts to the max. line on the dip stick and that amount includes changing the oil filter. sounds to me like your over filling by 8 oz. and that is just as bad as under filling.

i work at the engine plant in Windsor, and spec book for f series 5.4 liter engine calls for 6.5 to 6.7 U.S. quarts even considering oil filter use ... if you have a different vehicle or engine ask and i'll see what i can do ... p.s. different vehicles sometimes means different oil pans etc.

i am not sure if every ounce of oil is drained during an oil change .. depending on temps and how long drain plug is out there could be variences so why split hairs ... dealership should be trained to at least change oil. :-)

5W-20 engine oil???

Let's just say that someone goes out and buys a used 97 and up f150. Now they get this truck but its missing the owners manual. Does that mean that he cant change his oil because he doesnt know how much he needs to put in down to the tenth of a quart. Anyone I have ever known has used the dipstick to determine how much oil needs to be put in. I like to keep mine filled near the full line as a just incase cause you never know when a gasket or a hose to a remotely mounted oil filter could blow. Having that extra quart could save your engine from frying.

P.S. My dad works at a Ford dealership and any f150 theyve ever had come in for a oil change has had 7 quarts put in it.

1979 F150 Custom 2wd C4 302 painted ford blue, bored .040 over, flat top pistons with valve reliefs, Edelbrock Performer cam, carb, and intake, stock heads til next spring, MSD Ready-To-Run distributor, MSD Blaster 2 coil, Edelbrock air cleaner and valve covers, Dynomax headers, dual exhaust with Flowmaster 40 Series mufflers, 38 gallon fuel tank(how i can drive it further than around the block) 9" rear end with 2.75 gears and open diff to change to 3.50s and locker next spring.

from what i can gather oil level on dip stick should be between top of "hatched" area and "o" mark ...this is from diagram on spec sheet, but i've seen soooo many different dip sticks just for different mod numbers that i'm not sure if the markings have change from either year to year or model to model on the tritons alone,
hey, it's not brain surgury - it's oil - it's a fun topic, and definitely debateable.

Yes, the age old question....
just my story: when i took my truck to the dealer in Yorkville, NY, they said FMC "approved" (or was it "doesn't care anymore") if i use 5W-20 (blended) or 5W-30 (dino)....they put 5W-30 in, so i had to ask...after the fact of course.
