I recently purchased a 1966 F250 352 that had been sitting for a few years.
We got it running but had trouble starting it each morning. Last attempt I decided to try a new fuel pump but when I unhooked the supply line I found no gas at the fuel pump. Help fix please!
MO Cub; welcome to FTE; I've agree with Prostock hold heartly; Gas is only at its best quality under 90 days; I had problems with the pickup tube in the tanks clogged and not allowing good flow; as well as rust settlements in the system clogging the carb. I you can exchange the hose's, remove clean the carb as well; its great preventive measures and will save ya down the road.
Even the tanks is easy to / not expensive to get clean out. You can even do it yourself.
I wouldn't; Its a low cost part at all auto suppliers; that I would not chance with out; I also like to run a inline filter as well. I prefer the clear window type; others state solid cansister.
I am Having the EXACT same problem. My slick had been sitting for about 3 years before I got it. So I rebuilt the carb, got it all adjusted, and bam - no more fuel getting to the carb...or the fuel pump.
Once the weather here in OH gets a little nicer, I'm going to take out the tank and clean, and I'm going to replace the fuel line (bought some steel braided hose to replace it with). I even bought a brand new fuel pump for the hell of it ($25 at autozone).
Same issue here. I installed a new fuel pump and still have very little fuel getting to the carb. It runs but hesitates on accel and surges at highway speeds. Idles smooth one minute and rough the next. I suspect a clogged pickup tube or just a dirty tank. Looks like a pretty easy tank to remove. How do you remove the pickup tube?
ah the wonders of Stabil. the pickup tube is welded in place on these trucks. so running a cleaner backwards through it or forwards if you prefer and also a small brush that will fit on the inside of the pipe. are about your only options here. the rest is like everyone is saying. clean evey piece associated with the fuel line.if you dont wanna remove and clean the carb run something trough it that will break down the varnish and flush it out. I have a clear fuel filter inline to my carb and , with the engine running, it is only 1/2 to 1/3 full of fuel. The fuel going into it from the pump sems really weak to me. I just checked my line from the tank to the pump and it is fine with good flow. I wonder if I have a weak pump or cam that drives the pump. Anyone switched to an electric pump ?
First and foremost, welcome to FTE. Suggest starting at point rubber hose connects at the metal tube from the fuel tank located under cab on drivers side. Remove the rubber hose, make sure to have a coffee can and be prepared to incert the hose again. If no fuel, then apply small amount of air in the fuel filler neck, this was suggested by FTE member when I had simular problem and it worked. I then plugged the fuel line, replaced the rubber hose to the filter, picked up fairly inexpensive canaster filter from summit, in your case, replace the canaster, now would not go without one, the residual gunk the filter catches is amazing.
Running old fuel also dramatically increases the chance of sticking an exhaust valve. With exception of the tank itself, cleaning the entire fuel system on these trucks is about as simple as it gets. Pull the level sender and go from there 'till you get to the needle valve in the carb.

From experience, let me reinforce what PROSTOCK and everyone else is stressing, GET RID OF THE OLD GAS.
I run Edelbrock carbs. They let me know immediatly if the gas is dirty or sour.
it is simple to see if the problem is tank related [dirty] remove supply line at fuel pump
hook up aline from pump and drop it in a gas can with new fuel drive truck if problem goes away the pump and everything in front of it[ i.e.fuel line to carb and carb ] are fine if so then hook the hose to the fuel line at the pick up tube drive again if it runs ok then your trouble is in the tank
