Anything could happen its your truck. it could handle it just fine or some fluke could happen and something could break. If you dont think its worth it then i wouldnt do it but thats just my 2 cents.
Knowing the intended load exceeds FORD's recommendations I wouldn't want to be committed to a 1000 mile round trip w/o some experience. Is it possible to load up the trailer w/similar load & take a local test drive to gauge how white your knuckles might get?
Tell us about the route. Trying to keep up w/interstate traffic is different than 500 miles of secondary roads through small towns. IMO the tranny is probably 2nd to the clutch, especially if you've got a lot of hills to stop/start on.
^^Not^^. But anyway, it would of been a bad move on your part to tow that with your 4.2, that Explorer and trailer would probably weigh a little under 6000lbs, which would be way too much for a 4.2.
I have towed a 98 f-150 on a trailer, which weighed a little over 6000lbs, and with my 5.4 you could definetly feel it back there, a 4.2 would never be able to tow something that heavy.
Even though i have towed some vehicles and tractors without trailer brakes, i highly recommend if you are going to tow something heavy use a trailer with trailer brakes, even more so if your like me and have no antilock brakes in the front.
