ouch, ouch. That's too much intial timing for your combo. i suspect your running hot. A little extra timing is good on these engines but I think you crossed a line.
Every couple of times i run my freshly rebuilt 400 (see gallery) I turn the key off it "diesels" for a half second and then it rotates in the opposite direction for three or four rotations. Am i too far advanced/retarded timing wise? Too rich/lean? Or am I just in need of an exorcism? Please help, I want to keep my beast alive and happy!
comp cams 260H: 260*total duration 0.484 total lift. No advance or retard on cam installation. Roughly 8:1 compression(stock). 18-22 deg initial advance with no vacumm connected@500-650rpm. (doesn't fluctuate, just can't remember.) Thanks in advance!!
Sorry! The vacumm is connected and its about 22*@800rpm. Just went out and put the light on it earlier today. Vacumm is tee'd from manifold to above throttle port to advance can on dist.
Sounds like you have you vaccum advanced hooked to the wrong source. You shouldn't be getting that much advance at only 800 rpms. Unhook the vaccum advance, set your timing for 10-12*. Hook your advance into a "PORTED" (Ported means above the butterflys, on the 600 Holley I believe there is an port on the right side of the idle plate) outlet and recheck. Your timing should be around 36* total @2800 to 3000 RPMS.
