Adding Tranny drain plug kit - which one?

Hey All,

I'm going to install a drain plug kit in my 5R55E. I picked one up at Autozone today but the longer I look at it the more I feel like it's a POS. Tin plated, with what looks like a REALLY cheap o-ring.

Can any of you make a suggestion on a good quality kit?

Google turned up a bunch of hits on Superior and B&M kits.

Thoughts?

In my opion, the drain plug kits are of limited use. To change the fluid you need to flush the transmission, preferably by disconnecting the cooler return line. You still need to drop the pan to change the filter, so the only function of the drain plug is to make the process a little less messy. My point here is that you cannot change the transmission fluid through a drain plug, because that method only removes about 1/3 of the fluid. The rest of the fluid is in the torque converter and the cooler system. There is some in the valve body too. You can find instructions on how to flush all of the fluid by searching the Ranger, Explorer, and Aerostar sections.

I would recommend the B&M kit. I have bought other B&M products and found them to be of good quality.

Thanks Bear. I am aware of the percentage of fluid changed with just a pan drop. I plan to do a flush, but I want the drain plug because I plan to do the 5R55E valve body upgrade TSB in a few months. I'm not having any issues with the tranny, I just want to possibly prevent them with the upgrade.

Right on, yeah, I am not really opposed to having a drain plug. But I just wanted to make sure that you understood that it only removes a small portion of the total fluid content. It is a great idea because you can drain most of the fluid out so that it isn't so messy when you drop the pan.
