The 2003 is kind of an engine to itself when it comes to the electronics and controls. If you just need a block then I think any year will be OK. There's not really anything you can't work around. Is the cylinder not repairable? They can be sleeved. If you want to get rid of it how much for the complete motor? Shoot me a PM.
The differences in the 03/04 engines are determined by the location of the ICP sensor. 03 engine ICP was under the turbo. Starting approx. 9/29/03 the ICP sensor was on the passenger side front of the valve cover. The red/blue engine sticker?? who knows.
I have a question that I also have a problem with. This came from the mouth of a ford diesel tech.
First of all, I am trying to swap my engine. Just a drop in. I bought an engine and had it shipped to the dealer. They say that there has been many changes. Here is a list of the changes:
Camshaft
Water Pump Housing
Turbo mount position
Length of the glow plugs
computer strategy
egr strategy
pistons
This is what I was told. My engine is apparently a second generation 04 engine. Build date Nov 18/03. The engine that I bought apparently is a first generation 04 engine and they say that the engine swap cannot be done. I am still waiting for them to call back with the info.
Is this true? Or am I getting filled with lies?
Also I have the international serial # right off the valve cover for verification. Can anyone help me with that?
Early 04 is an 03 engine. September 04 the true 04s were built so you have a early 04 engine and no it will not just drop in and hook up. How much do you want for the motor and what's the history. Sorry to hear of your problems.

Yes the turbo is for sale. It's still in the truck, Truck runs right now, will be pulling the engine in the next week or so. I would sell the long block for a small lump sum?????? Make Offers!!! Will any of the acc's fit 7.3l's?

Hmm, my 2004 F250 has a manufacturing date of February 2004 and I have a 2004 Power Stroke engine in the engine bay I do believe.
2003 and early 2004 Power Stroke engines had the ICP sensor located in the high pressure oil pump cover.
2004 (late build) Power Stroke engines had the ICP sensor located in the right front valve cover.
My sister-in-laws 2004 Excursion has a manufacturing date of November 2003. The ICP sensor on her Power Stroke is located on the high pressure oil pump cover. ( The 10th digit of her VIN number is 4 indicating a 2004 model year vehicle. She has since traded the Excursion for a 2007 Expedition with the extended body).
My February 2004 build F250 Power Stroke ICP sensor is located in the right front valve cover. (The 10th digit of my VIN is also 4 indicating a 2004 model year vehicle).
My sister-in-laws 2004 model year Excursion was build in late 2003.
