As my balancer isn't in a great sape anymore, i want to replace it.
I have a 400 engine.
I also have a 351M engine in the barn, and it has a small different balancer.
What weight do i need?
28 Oz, or 50 Oz?
When i take a look here, it say's that the balancer is for a 351M/400 and they don't make a difference in it. http://www.professional-products.com/dampersProductSBford.php
What's the problem when i put the wrong weight on it?
could be out of balance. I have a 351m and convert to 400 and don't know the difference between the 351m and the 400 balancer. I only have a 351m balancer.
You say it's smaller balancer on 351m ?
hmmm im converting my 351m into a 400 too, is there a real diference, how do we adjust it for a 400, ive heard it has to be moved 12+ or something like that...... help!!!!
Yes.
I have a 351M here in the barn, and it weights less, and is a bit thinner.
From what i've recovered so far, is that the weight is different due to a heavyer crank in the 400, but the balance weight is the same, and should be 28Oz.
Tomorrow i intend to pull the old balancer off, then we'll see...
yeah this is very important and could cause intenral negative vibrations in the rotating asemble...... let me know how it goes so I copy whatever you did, thanx..
The 351M uses a different harmonic balancer than the 400 -- It is best to buy a new 400 harmonic balancer to go along with a 400 crankshaft. You can use a 351M balancer, however, you will have to rebalance the 400 crankshaft by adjusting the counter weights to bring the assembly into balance. Also, the timing marks on the 351M balancer will be nearly useless on a 400 crank -- I know because the engine shop used the 351M balancer on my engine. I had to set my timing at 20+ degrees to get the engine properly timed.
