Lightbulb Rear end choices!!!

Just might go ol' skool!!! Dont NEED IRS...not gonna do any road-course racing!!!!

If the IRS gets too complicated...got it narrowed down to these!!!

>>>----Ford 9in. Rear End - $150---came out of a 69 Torrino

-1999 Ford rear end 3.55 complete 43,000 Miles - $350

>>>---Rear end 1998 ford crown vic - $100---Police car rear end complete with brakes

???-Rear end from a 1997 V-8 4x4 Ford Explorer. Tag reads 3L73 8.8 . (posi). 5 lug w/ disc brakes. Asking $200

>>>---Ford 9'' rear end from a 1969 F 100 - $100

Any suggestions on the above???? At least this way we can stay with our original plan of using a 4-bar rear!

I want to add some weight to the rear of this baby anyway!!!!!

Thanks again for everyones help with keepin' me from goin' NUTZ...

There is a tech article under Articles/Specs at the top. Under Most Popular Articles you will see one about rearends for the 1948-60 trucks.

Wish I was closer to you, I would jump on the 8.8 out of the Explorer, just what I am looking for my project.

what bolt pattern is the front? If 5x5.5 (stock) then the 1969 F100 would be the simple swap. If the front is modified using 5x4.5, then the explorer would be a simple swap. That said, I've read that 1992 (or newer?) Crown Vic rear brakes bolt onto a Torino bearing 9". Any truck newer than 1972 is too wide. Though that's what I'll be using, after narrowing.

Like Havi, I'd use the 69 F-100 rear (consider axle ratio) if you plan to the the 5x5.5 pattern up front but I'd use the 69 Torino (should be same width as F-100) rear if you plan to convert to 5x4.5 up front. If you want discs on the rear then I'd go with the Explorer and convert the front to 5x4.5.

Rear End confusion...

...in another threar I posted that I kinda decided against that 1999 Cobra
IRS I found for about $350.00 because even Dave @ www.truckirs.com doesn't have a "kit" to slap it in & I dont want to be the dude that figures it out!

I'm kinda leanin' towards the '69 Torino rear...but stilll haven't come up with a plan for the front-end.

As of right now....the stock front axle is sounding good for up front to get things movin'....

Waiting to hear back from some of the "sellers"....I'll keep ya posted...

-Thanks to all...

If you keep the stock front axle you can get a disc brake kit for it and convert the pattern to 5x4.5 to match the Torino...

Question Cobra IRS...probably not...

...this is driving me NUTZ....

Oldz-Kool 9" looking better-n-better all the time but I'm confused
(dosen't take much) about the Explorer rears....

What years are Explorer rears "IRS"?

Got another email from Dave at www.truckirs.com about the Cobra rear:

"sounds like a good deal... one option may be selling the IRS for $1000 and putting that money into the truck.
The difficult part is that the front mounts are not parallel or perpendicular to any driveline components... they attach to the vehicle at a funny angle - I'm sure there is some logic behind it, but I don't know the details.

It would certainly be unique... and I would like to see your solution when you complete the install.

-dave"

IF I can either find a cheap IRS OR talk the Cobra dude down in price I might re-consider....but as of right now I'm kinda gettin' a little scared I might bite off more than I can chew...9" is just fine...gonna nedd MORE PONNIES....

rockerman, Now you got ME confused, are you leaning towards a straight axle? I think 2001 was the last year for that in explorer, diff gear ratio's, disc brakes,
Are you asking about putting the explorer independent suspension in your truck? Sorry, can't help you on that one .
Ask away , fire those questions off, let's see what comes up! Good Luck on the process, KEEP IT FUN!!

Talking confusion about explorer rears...

I've gotten a few e-mails back from ads that included photos and some are solid rears and some aren't...that's where I got turned around!!!!

I didn't know when the change occured....oh well...live & learn...

I don't mean to be a pain in the a$$...I'm just so darn good at it...

I think I'm just gonna stick with my original plan of using a 9" & 4-bar...

Sorry for makin' everyone nutz...by why should I be alone in this insanity???

Besides...I've wanted this truck since I was a teenager and that was...well,
lets just say that was "a while ago"....

I just want it to be "right"...always
Thanks again...

about details like gearing, previous use, etc...

ALL I wanted to do was find a good-priced "UNIQUE" rear-end...

Hi,

The last year for a solid axle Explorer was 2001. You may want to look for a F100 rear axle assembly from 1957 to 1972, they are a bolt in on the other hand I think I've heard you may want to start from 1965 thru 1972. Just need new "U" bolts and relocate the shocks of coarse with a 4 bar you will have a little more to do (a lot) and it should cost a few more bucks ( again a lot). Anyway enjoy and maybe we will see you at a show this year.

Chuck

"a lot"...

...OK merc...uhhh...I mean Chuck... ...what do you mean by "a lot"..???

I know some of the 4-bar kits run close to $1000.00 & I could maybe make that work with some "planning"....

I got a line on a 9" out of a '72 pickup ($100) that the owner removed and does know some things about & that one out of a '69 Torino ($150) that the "kid" know NOTHING about as far as ratios, track-width, and so on...

I was gonna try & go this weekend and look at 'em but the snow has this entire area kinda jammed up....

man..every time I think I got it figured out something jams me up!

We ARE gonna be at the Super Nats in May...first on...can't wait...

Well I guess a $1000 is a lot, but I like leaf springs. I had a 54 merc car till this fall that is the reason for the merc54 the 6 is for my pickup not that you even asked. I will say if I never see snow again it would be fine with me.

The 72 pickup is the correct width don't know about the torino.
